Grudge Match: Andrew Jessup vs. Jeff Hoogland
Andrew got the better of Jeff in Modern group play, but the name of the game this round is Standard with a bye on Sunday on the line. Would Jeff and U/R Control or Andrew on Temur Aetherworks get a free pass into the Top 8?
Andrew kicked things off on a mulligan to six with an Evolving Wilds while Jeff played a Spirebluff Canals and passed, leading Andrew to play Attune with Aether for a Mountain and Jeff passed after playing an Island. Andrew resolved a Whirler Virtuoso, but Jeff killed it with Harness Lighting with the energy trigger on the stack. Jeff continued to make land drops as Andrew played a Servant of the Conduit, which also died to a Harness Lightning. Andrew went for a Chandra, Torch of Defiance on the next turn, but Jeff countered it with Negate.
Andrew cracked a Vessel of Nascency, getting Aetherworks Marvel off the enchantment. Jeff used an end step Glimmer of Genius, untapped, played a land and passed the turn. Andrew went for the Marvel, but Jeff had a Torrential Gearhulk to flashback the free Negate, keeping it off the table. Andrew killed the Gearhulk with a Harness Lightning so Jeff used his next turn to land a Dynavolt Tower. Andrew went for Emrakul, the Promised End on his next turn, but Jeff had Summary Dismissal to keep her off the board.
Andrew attempted to land another Vessel, but Jeff Negated it, and used an end step Flame Lash to start trying to close the game. Andrew went for another Marvel, but Jeff had Void Shatter and dropped Andrew to 13 with the Tower. Andrew landed a Woodweaver’s Puzzleknot and Jeff played his second Gearhulk, getting a free Glimmer of Genius. Andrew killed the Gearhulk with another Harness Lightning and Jeff dropped Andrew to nine with the Tower. Andrew cracked the Puzzleknot to gain some life, but Jeff kept plugging away with instants and the Tower.
Another Puzzleknot brought Andrew to 13 as he found a Server of the Conduit, leading Jeff to keep digging and killed it with Galvanic Bombardment. Jeff found his third Gearhulk and played it to get another free Glimmer on Andrew’s end step. This time the Hulk got in for five damage. Andrew found another Emrakul, but Jeff had another Summary Dismissal to keep her off the table, prompting the concession from Andrew.

Andrew, again on a mulligan to six, opened things with a Forest and a Vessel while Jeff played a Spirebluff Canals. Andrew got an energy from Aether Hub and cracked it after Jeff dropped another Canal, getting Aetherworks Marvel. Andrew resolved a Puzzleknot and shipped the turn after playing an Evolving Wilds, leading Jeff to play Anticipate. Jeff added a Wandering Fumarole to his board and shipped the turn, letting Andrew fetch a Mountain. Andrew landed a Whirler Virtuoso on his next turn and Jeff had nothing but another land drop.
Andrew attempted to resolve the Marvel, but Jeff countered it with Summary Dismissal and took a hit from the Whirler. Jeff played a land and passed, prompting Andrew to make some Thopters so Jeff killed the Whirler with Harness Lightning. Andrew went for a Chandra, but Jeff had Negate and took the hit from the Thopters.
Andrew attempted another Marvel, but a Gearhulk flashing back Negate took care of it and allowed Jeff to swing in for five on the next turn. Andrew got in for two and passed, leading Jeff to crack Blighted Cataract so Andrew used the window to kill the Gearhulk with Harness Lightning. Jeff played a main phase Anticipate and passed after making another land drop. Andrew dropped Jeff to 10 with the Thopters and went for another Emrakul, but Jeff had the Summary Dismissal. Jeff untapped and added two copies of Thing in the Ice to his board.
Andrew attacked and played a Servant of the Conduit. Jeff had nothing but a land drop and fell to six on the next attack. Andrew made a land drop and passed as Jeff played land-go, falling to four on the next turn. At the end step, Jeff played a Gearhulk to get a free Harness Lightning to kill a Thopter. Jeff attacked with the Gearhulk and Andrew chumped with the Servant. Andrew dropped Jeff to 3 with the Thopter and passed, falling to 16 from the Gearhulk.
Andrew played a Marvel, but Jeff had Negate to put his Things at two ice counters. Andrew attacked and Jeff killed the Thopter with Harness Lightning, untapped and used a Harness Lightning to flip his things and attack for lethal.
Jeff wins 2-0 to earn himself a bye on Sunday.
