Grudge Match: Jacob Baugh vs. Tom Ross
These two met up in Legacy group play with Baugh winning the Lands mirror 2-0. Neither managed to win the pod, so they meet in a Modern grudge match to see where they will go in the second section of group play. Tom brings G/W Tron while Jacob sleeved up Dredge. Who will advance to the Battle for Byes group and who will fall to the Stay to Play group?
Jacob was on the play on a mulligan to six, but Tom had pregame actions, exiling a Chromatic Star for his Gemstone Caverns before Jacob started off with a Faithless Looting. Tom played a pair of Expedition Maps with his Cavern and Urza’s Mine leading Jacob to draw and play an Insolent Neonate, finally finding a Dredge card – Dakmor Salvage – to begin his engine. Jacob finished his turn with another copy of Faithless Looting before passing the turn.
Tom cracked a map for a Power Plant and played it. Jacob dredged his land back and continued to brick, leading him to flash back a Looting, still coming up short on gas. Tom completed the Tron setup and landed Wurmcoil Engine, passing to Jacob who struggled to find a powerful dredger.
Jacob dropped an Insolate Neonate and brought back a Bloodghast with his land drop, bringing back to Prized Amalgam’s at his end step. Tom cracked the second map to get a Sanctum of Ugin and dropped an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon on his next turn, cracking the Sanctum for an Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. Tom used the -3 on Ugin to exile Jacob’s board and attacked with the Engine. Jacob, still without a dredger, took a draw before picking up his cards.
Tom 1, Jacob 0
Jacob went to six again on the play and led with a Copperline Gorge and no play while Tom started off with a Power Plant and a Chromatic Star. Jacob started his second turn by firing off a Thoughtseize, taking a Sylvan Scrying, leaving Tom with Path to Exile, two copies of Relic of Progenitus, and Urza’s Mine. Jacob had no other play and passed, leading Tom to play the Mine, cracking the Star and playing a Relic, using it before passing the turn.
Jacob played Cathartic Reunion, discarding Prized Amalgam and Bloodghast, leading Tom to crack the Relic, emptying the graveyards and letting Jacob draw three cards. Tom dropped the third Tron piece and played his second Relic before passing. Jacob played a Bloodghast from hand and passed as Tom tapped his Relic. Tom found another land and dropped Ugin, prompting a concession from Jacob.
Tom wins 2-0 and moves in the Battle for Byes group stage of Modern while Jacob falls to the Play to Stay section.
