Quarterfinals: Andy Boswell vs. Danny Goldstein
Two archetypes that were well-established before Fate Reforged got some goodies and meet up in the quarterfinals. Can Andy and a lower-to-the –ground Abzan Aggro list move on or will Danny and his R/W Aggro list, powered up with Monastery Mentor, get the best of him?
A rare photo of Andy wearing sleeves.
Andy, on a mulligan to five, started things off with a Temple of Malady while Danny, on a mulligan to six, led with a Battlefield Forge. Andy made the first play with a Rakshasa Deathdealer but Danny had a Magma Jet for it, losing one to his second Forge. Andy had no play other than a Windswept Heath and passed as Danny deployed a Goblin Rabblemaster and attacked, but Andy flashed in a Boon Satyr after fetching a Plains to eat the token.
Andy served in with his 4/2, dropping Danny to 14 and passed with no fourth land. Danny went to 12 from a Forge and Mana Confluence to play Hordeling Outburst, got a token with his Rabblemaster and convoked a Stoke the Flames to kill the Satyr, but Andy had another Boon Satyr to ambush the Rabblemaster. Andy dropped a Soldier of the Pantheon and shipped the turn.
Danny knocked Andy down to 15 with his goblins and passed back. Andy attacked with his Solider, but Danny Raised the Alarm, blocking and trading with one of the tokens. Andy played a Sandsteppe Citadel and passed. Danny chose “Dragons” on an Outpost Siege and attacked with the team to knock Andy to 10 and shipped the turn. Andy looked at his next card, but it was another land and he picked up his permanents.

Danny ponders his sideboard options.
Both approved of their openers this time and Andy led off with a Plains while Danny had a Wind-Scarred Crag. Andy brought the beats early with a Fleecemane Lion and sent it into the red zone on his third turn, dropping Danny to 18. Andy went to 18 as well to play a post-combat Anafenza, the Foremost and Danny Raised the Alarm at the end step. Danny kept the tokens coming with a Hordeling Outburst, which allowed him to convoke a Stoke the Flames to kill the 4/4 then get in with one soldier.
Andy attacked with the Lion to drop Danny to 15 and went to 16 himself to play a Rakshasa Deathdealer. Danny was content with playing a Temple of Triumph and passing back with open mana and plenty of blockers. Andy attacked with the team and Danny blocked the Lion with all five tokens, resulting in Danny falling to 13 and keeping just two goblins. Andy followed up with another Deathdealer and shipped the turn.
Danny landed Monastery Mentor and kept his goblins back on defense for the turn. Andy attacked with his cat demons and dropped Danny to 9 when he offered no blocks. Andy took another point of damage to add a Fleecemane Lion to his board and passed back. Danny considered his options but eventually passed back with no play. Andy attacked with his team and Danny placed his Mentor in front of a Deathdealer and a goblin in front of the Lion. Andy went to 13 to pump his blocked Deathdealer and Danny played Valorous Stance on the pumped Deathdealer and Andy responded with one of his own, but Danny had another copy of the new instant from Fate Reforged to kill the cat while getting a couple Monks. Danny used a Stoke the Flames on the Lion and fell to 7, untapped, and slammed a Goblin Rabblemaster and attacked Andy down to 6.
Andy deployed a Warden of the First Tree and passed back. Danny sent in his hoard of tokens and the Rabblemaster, leading Andy to block the Rabblemaster with the Deathdealer and block the Mentor with the Warden, while using a Bile Blight on the Goblins, but ell to 1. Andy drew his next card but extended the hand.
