Quarterfinals: Andy Ferguson vs. Sean Evans
Two Mardu decks meet up in the quarterfinals, but both players are looking to do different things. Andy is the aggressor in the semi-mirror match and Sean brings a controlling Planeswalker build to the matchup. Which strategy would reach the semifinals?
Andy looks for an answer to Wingmate+Roc.
Andy, on a mulligan to six, led things off with a Bloodsoaked+Champion on the play and attacked for 2 after missing his second land drop, while Sean played a couple lands. Andy had a follow up Champion on Turn 3 and attacked with both after finding a Mana+Confluence. Sean used a Hero’s Downfall on one of them so Andy simply replayed it with the raid ability.
Sean dropped to 13 to fetch up a Mountain and played Chandra%2C+Pyromaster to kill one of the Champions. Andy fired off a Magma+Jet on Sean during his upkeep to smooth out his draws, kept both on top and got in for 2, adding a Bloodstained+Mire to his board. Sean killed off the other Champion with Chandra and landed a Wingmate+Roc. Andy searched for a Mountain off his fetch land and used a Crackling+Doom to drop Sean to 7 and get rid of the flyer.
Sean used Chandra’s zero ability to get a free Temple+of+Silence, keeping the card on top, and used a Thoughtseize to see a handful of two Lightning+Strikes, Goblin+Rabblemaster, and Butcher+of+the+Horde. Sean went to 5 and took a Strike before passing the turn. Andy opted to play no spells on his turn and passed with three open mana. Sean upped Chandra to knock Andy to 10 and passed the turn as Andy hit him down to 2 with the remaining Strike. Andy deployed his Rabblemaster and attacked Sean for 1 with a token.
Sean used the ultimate on Chandra to get a free Anger+of+the+Gods, but was hoping for a Crackling+Doom. Sean played a new Chandra and upped her to knock Andy to 9. Andy played another Rabblemaster but Sean had a Crackling+Doom before combat, dropping Andy to 7. Sean used Chandra’s zero and found an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion and made three soldiers. Andy just played a Bloodstained+Mire and passed. Sean whiffed on Chandra’s zero, attacked for 3 and made more tokens. Andy drew for the turn and found the lethal Lightning+Strike to take the first game.

It was all temples until Andy started Turn 2 with a Thoughtseize, taking a Hero’s Downfall. Sean dropped Brimaz%2C+King+of+Oreskos, but it wasn’t long for the world as Andy had a Crackling+Doom. Sean had a replacement Brimaz and passed after adding Urborg%2C+Tomb+of+Yawgmoth to his side of the table. Andy had a Bloodsoaked+Champion and a land for his turn. Sean attacked Andy down to 12 and shipped the turn.
Andy went to 11 and dropped a Stormbreath+Dragon that crashed into the red zone, but Sean had a Downfall for it. Sean knocked Andy to 6 with another attack from Brimaz and his cat soldiers. Andy peaked at his next card and decided to shuffle up for the third game.

Sean decides what to do with Chandra.
Andy went down to six while Sean kept his seven after tanking for a bit. Both players led with temples and basic lands and Andy passed Turn 3 with no land. Sean found his and passed as Andy found a Mana+Confluence off the top and used a Brain+Maggot to take a Crackling+Doom from a hand loaded with removal.
Sean fetched up a Mountain and got rid of the Maggot with an Anger+of+the+Gods, getting back his Crackling+Doom. Andy landed a Goblin+Rabblemaster and attacked for 1. Sean cleared the board with another Anger and passed. Andy deployed Butcher+of+the+Horde and was killed via Crackling+Doom by Sean, who missed on his fourth land once again. Andy had another Butcher, but Sean had another Crackling+Doom.
Andy kept the threats coming with a Stormbreath+Dragon and attacked Sean to 14. Sean found a Temple of Malic and sent the card to the bottom. Andy was able to get in for 4 more and added a Brain+Maggot to take a Hero’s Downfall. After Sean passed with no play, Andy hit him with a Stoke+the+Flames. Andy sent in the Dragon and Sean killed it with a Hero’s Downfall. With the coast clear, Andy fired off two copies of Lightning+Strike to take the match.
