Quarterfinals: Ben Robinson vs. Eric Rill
Eric Rill readies up for Game 1 of the quarterfinals.
Ben led with an Arid Mesa and passed while Eric started things off with a Gitaxian Probe to see three pieces of countermagic in double Spell Pierce and a Force of Will along with a Stoneforge Mystic. Eric played his Tropical Island and passed back. Ben played Misty Rainforest and cracked both fetch lands to find a Tundra and Volcanic Island to play a Stoneforge Mystic that grabbed a Batterskull. Eric played Brainstorm at end of turn then untapped and played a Swamp and played a Dark Ritual that got countered by Force of Will, removing a Snapcaster Mage. Eric played a Lotus Petal and sacrificed it for a black mana to cast Cabal Therapy hitting with “Batterskull” and seeing the rest of Ben’s already known hand.
Ben attacked for one and passed. Eric untapped and cast another Cabal Therapy that Ben used a Spell Pierce on, but Eric paid the two, then Ben decided to Daze it returning a Tundra. Ben replayed his Tundra, attacked for one and passed. Eric played Brainstorm then used another Probe before passing. Ben hit again with Stoneforge Mystic then passed.
Eric continued with his discard plan, this time using Duress that hit Spell Pierce after Ben used his response to hit Eric with a Lightning Bolt. Eric played a third Brainstorm and followed it up with a third Probe to see Ben’s last card was a Volcanic Island. With the coast clear, Eric played a Cabal Ritual and a Lion’s Eye Diamond, then cracked the Diamond with priority to cast Infernal Tutor to find Past in Flames. Eric cast Past in Flames, did the math, and Ben packed it in for Game 2.

Ben Robinson thinks before sideboarding for Game 2.
Ben started with a Tundra and no turn-1 play while Eric opened with a Scalding Tarn into an Island and cast a Ponder that met a Spell Peirce. Ben fetched with a Flooded Strand to grab a Volcanic Island and he cast a Meddling Mage naming “Tendrils of Agony.” Eric played and cracked a Polluted Delta to grab a Swamp then cast Duress to see Spell Peirce, Brainstorm, Meddling Mage, and a Misty Rainforest. Eric decided on taking Brainstorm. “Hard to decide on a card when none of them matter,” Eric said.
Eric Rill considers a very awkward Ad Nauseam reveal.
Eric revealed 11 cards to go down to 3 life, and started with a couple of rituals and a Lotus Petal then bounced the Meddling Mage with Echoing Truth and used Cabal Therapy to get rid of two Meddling Mage before passing. Ben drew and cast a Delver of Secrets and passed.
Eric untapped and fetched for a Volcanic Island then cast Cabal Ritual and Past in Flames then recast a flurry of rituals and storm-building discard spells until he reached lethal status for Tendrils of Agony.
