Quarterfinals: Chris Oâ€™Bryant vs. Dan Musser
Chris got here with U/W/R Control utilizing the new R/U temple and Banishing Light from Journey into Nyx, while Dan ignored the new set by playing Mono-Black Devotion. Would Chris advance behind Sphinx’s Revelation or would Dan prove Mono-Black Devotion isn’t going anywhere?

Chris led things off after dropping to six cards with a Temple of Triumph and Dan led off with a turn-1 Thoughtseize and took a Supreme Verdict from Chris’ hand, leaving him with Elspeth, Sun’s Champion, Last Breath, and two lands. Chris played a Temple of Epiphany and Dan had a Pack Rat, but Chris used the Last Breath on his next turn and played a tapped Sacred Foundry. Dan landed a Lifebane Zombie and Chris passed his fourth turn back after playing an Island.
Dan attacked for five his Mutavault and Zombie and Chris passed with no action. Dan attacked Chris down to 12 with his 3/1 and attempted to play a Desecration Demon that got hit by a Dissolve. Chris slammed his Elspeth and made three soldiers. Dan attacked Chris down to 9 then played a Gray Merchant of Asphodel to knock Chris to 5. Chris used a Banishing Light on the Zombie then made more tokens.
Dan played a Pack Rat and passed with no attacks. Chris made more tokens and added a temple to his board then Dan made a rat at end of turn. Dan untapped and played another Gray Merchant that Chris didn’t have a counter for, and they moved on to their sideboards.

Chris kept his seven while Dan went down to six this time. Chris started with a temple and Dan played a Swamp, but no discard spell. Chris played another temple, giving him access to all three colors then Dan fired off a Duress to grab a Dissolve then played a Thoughtseize to take a Detention Sphere, leaving Chris with a Sphinx’s Revelation. Chris played another tapped land and Dan resolved a Nightveil Specter. Chris used a Supreme Verdict to kill the 2/3 and Dan played a land and passed. Chris did the same and Dan dropped a Desecration Demon on his next turn.
Chris played a Jace, Architect of Thought and ticked it down to net a temple and a Mutavault, played the temple and passed. Dan killed the Jace with his Mutavault and hit Chris for six with his Demon then proclaimed “Yolo” and slammed another Demon. Chris passed with no play and Dan started doing math. Dan moved to attacks and Chris gave up a Mutavault to tap a Demon then Dan knocked him down to 6 with the other Demon and his land. Chris used a Revelation for three at the end step to go back up to 9. Chris dropped an Elspeth and killed the Demons with her minus then passed after playing a land.
Dan killed Elspeth with his land and played an Underworld Connections on a Swamp. Dan went to 16 to draw a card and played Lifebane Zombie to see a grip full of gas including three more Revelations. Dan attacked and Chris went to 11 after another Revelation. Chris used an Izzet Charm to kill the Zombie, played a temple and played Assemble the Legion. Dan continued to draw cards off his land then attacked Chris to 7 with his two Mutavaults. Chris passed after making a solider leaving up plenty of mana. Dan attacked with his lands and a Nightveil Specter to drop Chris to 3, after he chumped with a soldier, and unveiled an Elspeth with the flyer. Dan played a Pack Rat and Chris went to 9 off his third Revelation. Chris cleared the board with a Verdict then dealt with the Underworld Connections with a Banishing Light.
Dan went for a Thoughtseize, but Chris stopped it with a Dissolve, protecting his fresh new hand. Dan attacked Chris to 5 with his lands then ended the turn with an Erebos, God of the Dead. Chris got three soldiers off Assemble the Legion then left two soldiers back and attacked with the other and his Mutavault to knock Dan down to 9. Dan dropped to 7 at the end of the turn to draw a card off Erebos. Dan dropped to 5 off Erebos, then again to 3 after not finding what he was looking for. Dan fired off a Duress, but Chris used a Dissolve. Dan tried again with another Duress and took the Syncopate from Chris, leaving him with a Revelation and a bunch of lands. Dan attacked with a Mutavault and Chris offered no blocks to fall to 3. Chris upped his Legion and attacked with seven tokens which prompted Dan to scoop up his cards.

Dan, on the play for the first time in the match, dropped to six while Chris kept seven. Dan found a decent six and played a Swamp and passed while Chris played a tapped Hallowed Fountain, then Dan added another Swamp and passed back. Chris had another tapped land and Dan fired off a Thoughtseize on his third turn. Dan decided to take Dissolve and left Chris with two copies of Elspeth, Sphinx’s Revelation and three lands. Dan didn’t find another land passed. Chris hit his land drop and passed back.
Dan found a Temple of Deceit and played a Duress, opting to take the Banishing Light, Chris drew the previous turn. Chris continued to play land-go, and Dan went for a Lifebane Zombie, but Chris used a Dissolve to counter it. Chris got in for two with his land and Dan resolved another Zombie. Chris shocked himself to land an Elspeth and made three tokens. Dan used a Thoughtseize to take the Sphinx’s Revelation from Chris then knocked the planeswalker down to 2 loyalty. Chris attacked for three with his tokens then cleared the board with a Verdict and finished his turn by making three more tokens.
Dan played another Zombie and Chris used an Izzet Charm at the end of the turn to kill it. Chris attacked for five and Dan used a Bile Blight on the tokens, then Chris made three more tokens. Dan played a Pack Rat and passed. Chris attacked and made more tokens and shipped the turn with Dan at 4. Dan went to 7 off a Gray Merchant, Chris kept upping his Elspeth, while Dan started making more rats.
Dan went for another Gray Merchant, but Chris had the Syncopate. Chris untapped, ultimated Elspeth and attacked for the win.
