Quarterfinals: Glen Ray vs. Sean Adam
Glen's Zombies are backed by Vampires.
Sean wasn’t excited to face Zombies in the Top 8—one of his worst matchups, and with a list that seemed well-suited to smacking him down. Glen’s Zombie Pod deck was a little faster than RUG Pod, and he seemed poised to advance.
Forest and Birds of Paradise for Sean, while Glen got aggressive with turn 1 Gravecrawler. Sean played it real defensively, miracling Bonfire of the Damned on turn 2 and playing Island. Mortarpod from Glen slew the Birds, and Sean had only Mountain on turn 3—no spells.
Geralf’s Messenger dropped Sean to 18 and created a threat, but Phantasmal Image gave Sean the same before he cast Llanowar Elves. Birthing Pod turned the Messenger’s first life into Falkenrath Aristocrat, and Glen swung for 4 damage. Sean had a tough race ahead of him against the flier...
Except that Phantasmal Image gave him his own! That let him attack for 7 damage and drop Glen to 6, threatening to slay him in short order with Llanowar Elves on defense. Glen slowed down now, bringing back Gravecrawler, equipping Mortarpod, then casting Butcher Ghoul and attacking with his Aristocrat.
Sean sacrificed his Messenger Image to get another Aristocrat and tried to block, but the Mortarpod warded it off... even though he’d already made it indestructible by sacrificing his other Image!
Thrun couldn’t stem the bleeding, and Phyrexian Metamorph copied Aristocrat to put Glen up a game.

Turn 1 Gorge and Elves for Sean while Glen again had Gravecrawler. No turn 2 from Sean past Forest, and Glen attacked him to 18 before playing another Swamp and Diregraf Ghoul. Failing to miracle Bonfire, Sean played Zenith for one to grab Birds of Paradise. Smelling weakness, Glen pounced with Go for the Throat on the Birds and an attack for 4.
On 16, Sean hit a third land and tapped out for Thrun, the Last Troll. Glen was still on two mana, but that was enough to cast Blood Artist. He sent in Gravecrawler, draining Sean for 1 when he blocked, knocking him to 13. Thrun swung, and Glen attacked back with Ghoul before casting Phyrexian Metamorph to copy Thrun... but failing to stack his Blood Artist triggers! That left Sean on 11.
Acidic Slime destroyed a Glen’s third land, and Sean appeared to be pulling ahead on the board though he was way behind on life. Another Blood Artist for Glen convinced Sean not to trade with Diregraf Ghoul. That, or the Birthing Pod in his hand that he used to turn Acidic Slime into Inferno Titan! He paid a fair bit of life, losing 6 to the Blood Artists and 2 more to the Pod, going to 1 life.
Another Blood Artist from Glen made his Diregraf Ghoul’s attack lethal, no matter what Sean could do.
