Quarterfinals: Greg Reelitz vs. Chas Hinkle
Greg is usually seen judging these sorts of events, but wins in a pair of Super IQs has given him the itch for more competitive Magic. And it’s tough to get more Spikey than RUG Delver! Chas has won a couple of PTQs in his time, which is arguably more prestigious. But this is his highest profile finish to date, and as one of a trio of players on Maverick in this top 8 he’s confidant in the green machine. Which pillar of Legacy can close the deal?
Chas awaits his opponents decision!
By virtue of the second overall seed, Greg had the play and led things off with Nimble Mongoose. Cavern of Souls on Human into Noble Hierarch was Chas’ first play. Nimble Mongoose drew first blood and Wasteland took care of Chas’ Cavern. Chas had a Wasteland of his own for Greg’s Taiga on his turn and he used the Noble Hierarch to cast Mother of Runes. Greg had no third land and had to pass.
Forest and Sylvan Library threatened to put things far out of reach for Chas, and Greg missing his land drop yet again pushed the game even further in that direction. Chas paid four life off of his Library on his next turn and cast Green Sun’s Zenith for two, finding Scavenging Ooze. Greg once again failed to find land and had to discard. Chas added another Noble Hierarch and attacked with his twice Exalted 4/4 Scavenging Ooze, dropping Greg to 16. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben resolved for Chas after that. Greg finally found a land, but there wasn’t any follow up spell.
“It’ll be impressive if I dig myself out of this hole.”
Chas attempted to Wasteland Greg’s fetchland and also Wastelanded his Volcanic Island that it searched up and passed after Thalia hit Greg for four. Greg found Misty Rainforest on top and played it. He used the fetch, going to 10, and used his newly found Volcanic Island to cast Delver of Secrets. Chas attacked for four yet again, dropping Greg to 6 and then cast Green Sun’s Zenith for three, putting Knight of the Reliquary into play. Greg saw the writing on the wall and, unable to come back from such a deep hole, moved on to sideboarding.
Greg has his eyes on the prize!
Both players kept their openers and things were quickly underway. Delver of secrets off of Tropical Island for Greg, and Noble Hierarch off Forest for Chas. Ponder blind-flipped the Delver, and Insectile Aberration took Chas to 17. He played Misty Rainforest and passed. Chas cast Path to Exile on the Insect and used Wasteland on Tropical Island. Greg simply passed.
Chas played basic Plains and put Thalia on the stack, and in response Greg cast Brainstorm off of a freshly searched up Volcanic Island. Thalia resolved, but Wasteland helped cast Forked Bolt to bury both of Chas’ creatures. Scavenging Ooze for Chas (and no third land) was Chas’ next turn. Greg played out another Misty Rainforest and attempted Mind Harness, which stole the Ooze to fight for Greg. Chas attempted Engineered Exolpsives for one, and Greg responded with Spell Pierce. Mother of Runes for Chas before the end of his turn.
Greg cast Submerge on Mother of Runes at end of turn, and then he untapped and took Chas down to 15. Greg cast a Scavenging Ooze of his own post combat and passed. Chas had another Mother but no other land or creature. Both Oozes squished into the red for Greg, who took Chas to 11. He then cast Ponder and followed it by playing Scalding Tarn before passing. Chas still could not find a third mana, but he attacked with Mother of Runes and then tried to cast Scryb Ranger. Greg responded with a fetchland activation to find Tropical Island and cast Brainstorm, but had no further responses. He untapped the Mom, replayed the Forest and passed. Greg untapped and laid yet another land (plenty for RUG Delver!) and the pair of Oozes once again entered the breach. Chas blocked an Ooze and attacks took Chas to 9. Ponder from Greg, who shuffled and passed.
Chas attacked for one with the Time Spiral Faerie, which got untapped post combat with the Ranger’s ability, and Swords to Plowshares attempted to take out the Scavenging Ooze that was actually owned by Greg. Greg untapped and Chas blocked the stolen Scavenging Ooze with Mother of Runes, who gained protection from green. Greg responded with the Fire half of Fire // Ice, to which Chas activated the Faerie to save the Mother of Runes from the burn spell. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben came down for Chas on his next turn. Greg paid five to keep Chas’ Scavenging Ooze all to himself and attacked with the Grizzly Bears, which got stonewalled by Mother. Thalia dealt Greg two damage, and after he finally found a third land (Karakas) he passed. Greg cast Delver of Secrets and passed.
Chas cast Swords to Plowshares on Greg’s Delver. Greg could only pay the enormous upkeep (seven now) on Mind Harness and passed. Chas found a fetchland and hardcast a Thrun, the Last Troll. The Ooze got Lightning Bolted before it passed back to Chas. Greg found an Ooze to call his own and cast it. Chas got to untap with creature advantage for the first time the game, and further pressed that advantage by casting Linvala, Keeper of Silence. Greg made Ooze a 4/4 before it entered, but it couldn’t tangle with Thrun and Greg fell to 12. Greg untapped and cast the Rough half of Rough // Tumble, taking down Mother and Thalia. That was it for Greg, who passed. Chas cast Garruk Relentless, which made a Wolf token, and attacked with his Linvala (dropping Greg to 9). Delver of Secrets came in for Greg, but it was not that impressive facing the pair of legends and an angry green planeswalker.
Garruk fought the Delver on the next turn and became Garruk, the Veil-Cursed. After Noble Hierarch came in, Linvala dropped Greg to 5. Knight of the Reliquary added insult to injury. Greg drew, but did not find what he was looking for, and extended his hand.
Chas 2, Greg 0.
