Quarterfinals: Ian Anderson vs. Sonny Aparicio
Two combo decks met up in the quarterfinals with neither player looking to play a fair game of Magic. Would Ian be one of two Elves players to reach the semifinals or would Sonny ride the glass cannon of Belcher one step further?
Sonny hopes 18 goblins is good enough.
Ian kicked things off with a Wooded Foothills for a Bayou and played a Deathrite Shaman. Sonny played a Land Grant getting a Stomping Ground, shocked himself to play it untapped, and played Tinder Wall, sacrificed it, went with Rite of Flame into Seething Song into Gitaxian Probe into Rite of Flame into Chrome Mox into Burning Wish for Empty the Warrens and made 18 goblins.
Ian drew a card and considered his options facing down many goblins and decided on starting with a Glimpse of Nature then played a Quirion Ranger after exiling his Wooded Foothills, then untapped the Shaman by bouncing his Bayou, replayed his Bayou and played Birchlore Rangers into Nettle Sentinel into a Wirewood Symbiote into a Shaman he had returned to his hand into a Green Sun’s Zenith for a Dryad Arbor and passed.
Sonny attacked with the team and Ian blocked four of them to fall to 5, killing off four goblins and Ian lost the Arbor and Symbiote. It was up to Ian to find a bunch of blockers or find a way to win and he started with a Misty Rainforest and a Glimpse of Nature. Ian fetched up a Bayou with his Misty to go down to 4 and played a Heritage Druid and started making mana and played Birchlore Rangers into a Natural Order, sacrificing a Heritage Druid to get a Craterhoof Behemoth and was able to attack for the win!

Sonny ended up going to six as well and both were happy with what they had. Ian led off Game 3 with a Bayou off a Wooded Foothills and played Cabal Therapy naming Lion’s Eye Diamond, but whiffed as Sonny didn’t play any.
Sonny started with a Probe to see Ian had the Mindbreak Trap. Sonny considered his options and removed an Elvish Spirit Guide for a Timber Wall that he sacrificed to play Burning Wish to get Shattering Spree and passed. Ian played a Quirion Ranger and a Green Sun’s Zenith for a Dryad Arbor and shipped the turn.
Sonny drew but had no options and passed the turn.
