Quarterfinals: Jacob Geeo vs. Dylan Lerch
Two classic Standard decks square off in this quarterfinal matchup. Can Jacob lead the charge with Abzan Midrange and Siege Rhinos or will Dylan show his prowess with Jeskai Aggro?
Jacob, on a mulligan to five, kicked things off with a Temple of Malady and Dylan did the same with a Temple of Triumph. Jacob dropped another Temple as Dylan got to the board first with a Seeker of the Way and Jacob matched with a Fleecemane Lion on his third turn after fetching a Plains. Dylan put a card on the bottom of his deck with another Temple and shot down the Lion with a Lightning Strike to let him get in for three with the Seeker.
Jacob regained the life with a Siege Rhino on his fourth turn, but Dylan had a Valorous Stance to kill it and got in with the Seeker again. Jacob simply played another Rhino and played a third Temple of Malady. Dylan paused for a moment and decided to get in for three in the air via a Mantis Rider. “Pretty good mulligan to five,” he said as he passed the turn.
Jacob didn’t quite agree as he played a sixth land and passed back with no attack, leading Dylan to send a Stoke the Flames at Jacob. Dylan untapped, played a Sarkhan, the Dragon Speaker and attacked for seven in the air, dropping Jacob to 5. Jacob played a Planeswalker of his own, a Sorin, Solemn Visitor, plussed it and send the Rhino at Sarkhan. Dylan opted to trade his two creature for the Rhino, bringing Jacob to 10.
Dylan used a Dig Through Time to find a Goblin Rabblemaster and killed Sorin after upping Sarkhan. Jacob used the rest of his cards, a Drown in Sorrow and a Hero’s Downfall, to clear the board and both players passed for a few turns with no action. After six turns of no action, Dylan fired off another Dig Through Time and passed the turn. Jacob went for a Thoughtseize to see a hand of three copies of Stoke the Flames and a Valorous Stance. Jacob saw that the jig was up and picked up his cards.

This time Dylan went to Pairs as Jacob was cool with his opener and both players opened with tapped lands. Jacob opted for a Temple of Malady as Dylan deployed a Soulfire Grand Master. Jacob played a Courser of Kruphix to hold the ground, but Dylan convoked a Stoke the Flames to kill it and went up to 22 thanks to the Grand Master.
Jacob hit his fourth land drop and played a Fleecemane Lion, leaving two lands open. Dylan made his land drop and passed, leading Jacob to use a Bile Blight on the Grand Master. Jacob untapped, played a land, and got in for three with his Lion. Dylan played Sarkhan, the Dragon Speaker and hit Jacob for four as he made his Lion monstrous. Jacob exiled the Planeswalker with an Utter End and dropped Dylan down to 14 with his Lion.
Dylan made no actions and shipped the turn, falling to 10 from the Lion on the next combat step. Jacob played a land and passed, leading Dylan to Dig Through Time. Dylan contemplated his Dig, “Can I mulligan this?” he asked before picking two.
Dylan found his two and played and attacked with a Mantis Rider before passing. Jacob knocked Dylan to six and passed again. Dylan dropped Jacob to 9 with the Rider and passed back. Jacob resolved a Siege Rhino, knocking Dylan to 3, fetched a Forest, falling to 11, and played Sorin, but Dylan stopped it with a Negate. Jacob attacked with the Lion and Dylan chumped with his Rider. At the end step, Dylan killed the Rhino with a Valorous Stance. Dylan resolved an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion and made three soldiers, but another Rhino from Jacob meant the pair was going to a third and final game.

Both players kept their seven-card hands this time and again temples. Dylan had no two-drop and both players added more tapped lands to their boards. Dylan passed on the third turn after adding a Plains and Jacob hit the board first with a Courser of Kruphix. Dylan passed after dropping a Battlefield Forge and Jacob got in for two and went for a Siege Rhino, but Dylan countered it with a Disdainful Stroke.
Dylan hit his fifth land drop and played Sarkhan, killing the Courser with the powerful Planeswalker. Jacob resolved his second attempt at a Rhino and went up to 24. Dylan dropped him down to 20 with Sarkhan and passed with five open mana. Jacob went for a Sorin, but Dylan stopped it with another Stroke, but lost his Sarkhan to the Rhino attack. After combat, Jacob fetched down to 19 and passed the turn.
Dylan played a Shivan Reef and killed the Rhino with Elspeth, leading Jacob to play a Tasigur for two mana, keeping a Rhino in the bin, and passed with four mana up. Dylan made soldiers with Elspeth, played a land, and passed, leading Jacob to activate Tasigur, netting him a Rhino after the flip revealed a Hero’s Downfall. Jacob sent Tasigur at Elspeth and Dylan chumped with a Soldier. When Jacob passed, Dylan sent a Stoke the Flames at the damage legend, but Jacob responded by growing Tasigur with an Abzan Charm, then sent an Utter End at Elspeth, exiling the Planeswalker. After the damage was done, Dylan went to 13 to Dig Through Time.
Dylan followed the Dig on his next turn with a Rabblemaster, hitting for two with his tokens to knock Jacob to 17. Dylan passed and Jacob went for the Rhino, but Dylan had the Stroke to stop it. Jacob passed with no attacks, leaving up four mana. Dylan deployed a Mantis Rider and attacked with the flyer and his tokens. Jacob blocked a token and fell to 11.
