Quarterfinals: Jeffrey Tang vs. Justin Porchas
The two pillars of Standard are meeting in the quarterfinals. Will Jeffrey Tang and Jeskai Aggro continue its dominance on the Open Series or will Justin Porchas move on with Abzan Midrange?
Jeffrey sideboards after going up a game.
Jeffrey was first to the board with a Seeker of the Way while Justin led with two Temples of Malady. Jeffrey attacked and used a Magma Jet to drop Justin to 15 and left both cards on top. Justin passed with a third land so Jeffrey slammed a Goblin Rabblemaster and attacked Justin to 12 before playing a Mystic Monastery. Just had his deck’s first haymaker, Siege Rhino and recouped some life from the early push from Jeffrey.
Jeffrey used a Jeskai Charm to bounce the Rhino and attacked Justin to 6. Justin fetched a land, however, and cleared the board with End Hostilities, surviving at 5. Jeffrey passed without any action so Justin played the Rhino to go back up to 8 and drop Jeffrey to 19. Jeffrey knocked Justin to 6 with a Magma Jet, then hit him down to 3 with a Lightning Strike.
“Am I dead?” Justin asked.
Jeffrey revealed a Stoke the Flames, so Justin picked up his cards.

This time Justin made the first play, a Turn-3 Sylvan Caryatid, while Jeffrey did nothing but play a Mystic Monastery on his third turn. Justin added a Courser of Kruphix to the board, revealing an End Hostilities. Jeffrey still had no action so Justin played an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth off the Courser and served in for 2. Jeffrey went for a Goblin Rabblemaster, but Justin hit it with a Hero’s Downfall before it could make a Goblin token.
Justin drew his Abzan Charm and scryed away a land. The new reveal was a Siege Rhino so he attacked for 2 and played a Siege Rhino from his hand, but Jeffrey had the Disdainful Stroke. Jeffrey passed with six mana up and Justin got to play a Windswept Heath off the top, revealing another, and attacked for 2 with his Courser. Justin tried to land his second Rhino, but it met another Disdainful Stroke. Justin fetched up a land to clear the top of his deck and resolved his third attempt at a Rhino. Jeffrey used a Magma Jet at the end step, untapped and used a Banishing Light on the Rhino.
Justin attacked Jeffrey to 8 with his Courser and used Abzan Charm to draw two cards for two life and passed the turn with a Sandsteppe Citadel on the top of his library. Jeffrey used another Banishing Light to get rid of the Courser and shipped the turn under no pressure. Justin searched for more threats by drawing two with another Charm. Justin found a Thoughtseize and took a Jeskai Charm from Jeffrey’s hand and ended his turn by playing an Elspeth, Sun’s Champion and making three soldiers.
Jeffrey killed the Elspeth with a combination of Stoke the Flames and Lightning Strike and passed. Justin attacked for three and played a Courser of Kruphix to represent lethal. Jeffrey passed with no play and Justin attacked for the win on his next turn.

For the deciding game, Jeffrey kept his opener and Justin went down to six. Justin started the action with a Thoughtseize on Turn 2, taking a Goblin Rabblemaster from Jeffrey’s hand after seeing he had no blue mana source, with just a Mountain and Plains in play. Jeffrey peaked as he drew his top card and shook his head when it wasn’t a land and passed.
Justin fetched up a Forest and played Courser of Kruphix. Jeffrey found a Flooded Strand and immediately fetched up an Island and played a Rabblemaster, losing the token as it ran into the Courser. Justin got a Forest off the top and fired off a Hero’s Downfall on the Rabblemaster before bashing in for 2. Jeffrey used a Suspension Field to exile the Courser and passed the turn. Justin had a replacement Courser and passed after adding a land to his board.
Jeffrey passed, still on three lands. Justin fired off another Thoughtseize to take away the Disdainful Stroke Jeffrey left mana up for, then played a Sorin, Solemn Visitor, making a Vampire then attacked with the Courser so Jeffrey put in on top of his library with a Jeskai Charm. Jeffrey used a Banishing Light to get rid of the Planeswalker and passed. Just replayed his Courser and attacked Jeffrey to 15 with the Vampire. Jeffrey again put the Courser on top with a Charm and found a fourth land. Justin attacked for 2 again and used an Abzan Charm to draw two cards.
Jeffrey played his Chandra, Pyromaster and plussed her, dropping Justin to 14 before adding a Shivan Reef to his board. Justin knocked Chandra to 3 loyalty and played Wingmate Roc, triggering Raid to get another 3/4 flyer. Jeffrey used the zero ability on Chandra to get a Flooded Strand and played a Mantis Rider. Justin then served in with his flyers, attacking the Planeswalker, gaining Justin 2 life and killing Chandra. Jeffrey delved 6 to play Dig Through Time and Justin responded by using a Bile Blight on the Mantis Rider.
Jeffrey found the two he liked, played a Temple of Epiphany, and used a Suspension Field on the original Roc. Justin played a Courser, got a land off the top, and attacked Jeffery to 7. Jeffrey dropped Stormbreath Dragon and left it on defense so Justin used an Utter End on the Banishing Light that was exiling the Sorin. Justin untapped and fetched to clear the top of his library, scrying away a land, and showing a Temple on top. He plussed Sorin and attacked with his team. Jeffrey put the Dragon in front of the Roc token and dropped Jeffrey to 1. Justin ended his turn by playing another Courser of Kruphix.
Jeffrey went for an Elspeth, but Justin responded with a Hero’s Downfall on the Dragon. With that, Jeffrey extended the hand.
