Quarterfinals: Joe Lossett vs. Andrew Jessup
It’s the end of the line for someone as Joe and Andrew meet up in Standard. Would Joe’s Temur Energy build or Andrew’s Temur Aetherworks deck move into the semifinals?
Both players opened with Attune with Aether, but Joe got to the board first with a Turn-2 Voltaic Brawler, though Andrew killed it on his second turn with a Harness Lightning. Joe followed up with Electrostatic Pummeler while Andrew landed a Whirler Virtuoso. Joe played a tapped Game Trail and chose not to attack. Andrew got more energy from an Aether Hub and Servant of the Conduit before capping his turn with a Woodweaver’s Puzzleknot.
Joe surveyed the board on his next turn before attacking with the Pummeler. Andrew went into the tank as well to decide blocks before deciding to make a Thopter and blocking with the Servant and two Thopters. The block wouldn’t be enough as Joe had Rush of Adrenaline and Uncaged Fury to make his Pummeler have 32 points of power and trample over for more than lethal.

Andrew opened up this game with a Vessel of Nascency while Joe had a tapped Game Trail. Andrew played a land and passed, leading Joe to play a Brawler and pass as Andrew cracked the Vessel to get an Aether Hub. Andrew played the Hub and landed a Servant of the Conduit and another Vessel. Joe played his own Hub and attacked with the Brawler, pumping it to get in for four points of damage. Joe followed it up with an Electrostatic Pummeler and shipped the turn back.
Andrew opted to crack his Vessel, finding a Botanical Sanctum and playing it tapped before passing. Joe sent in the Brawler, pumping again, and connected for four to knock Andrew down to 12. Joe played a post-combat Brawler, but Andrew responded with Harness Lightning on the Pummeler. Joe let it happen and lost the Pummeler but deployed a Longtusk Cub before passing the turn.
Andrew went to 15 on his turn with a Puzzleknot and passed back. Joe added an untapped Cinder Glade to board and played a Bristling Hydra, going up to nine energy. Joe then sent his team into the red zone, pumping both Brawlers, leading Andrew to block the Cub with his Servant. Joe pumped his Cub once and knocked Andrew to seven before he went back to 10 by cracking the Puzzleknot.
Andrew went for Aetherworks Marvel and it resolved, so Andrew took a spin, going to four energy and finding Kozilek’s Return. Joe lost his Brawlers and Andrew played a follow up Vessel. Joe sat up in his in chair, looked at Andrew’s mana, and played Larger than Life on his Hydra, leading Andrew to extend the hand.
