Quarterfinals: John Wiley vs. Theodore Sung
It was a battle of the Delver variants in this quarterfinal, as 14-year-old Theodore Jung brought UWR Delver to battle against John Wiley’s BUG Delver.
Delver of Secrets showed up on turn 1 from John, and Theodore had Swords to Plowshares to get rid of it immediately. John replaced the Delver with a Deathrite Shaman, and Theodore took a peak with a Gitaxian Probe to see a hand of Spell Piece, Force of Will, and two Brainstorms for John. He Wastelanded John’s untapped Underground Sea, and Dazed when John had a Brainstorm in response.
After Theodore simply replayed his Volcanic Island, John fired off his second Brainstorm. This one resolved, and a second Delver of Secrets joined the fray on John’s side. Theodore had Lightning Bolt to fry the Deathrite Shaman, and Spell Pierce to force it through John’s Spell Pierce. The Delver immediately flipped over, revealing an Abrupt Decay, and knocked Theodore down to 12. Theodore had another Bolt on his next turn, however, to shoot the bug down.
Another Deathrite Shaman showed up for John, and a third copy the following turn. Theodore cracked a fetchland, and John attempted a Stifle, but Theodore fought over it with Force of Will. He followed up with Delver of Secrets, which provided a target for John’s Abrupt Decay. Theodore was out of gas at that point, and within two turns the pair of Deathrite Shamans had dropped him to 0 in 4-point increments.

Theodore spent his first turn cantripping, casting a Ponder and then a Gitaxian Probe, seeing a hand of Tropical Island, Stifle, Disfigure, Tarmogoyf, Spell Pierce, and a pair of Ponders. John fired off a Ponder of his own, then Theodore had a second Ponder himself. Rather than continue the cantrip arms race, John decided to jam Tarmogoyf into play. Theodore had no response, and it entered play as a 2/3.
Brainstorm found Rest in Peace for Theodore, which solved the Tarmogoyf problem for the time being. John had no follow-up, and Theodore went for a Stoneforge Mystic on his next turn. John Stifled the search trigger, but Theodore used Red Elemental Blast to force it through, and retrieved a Batterskull. John untapped and Disfigured the Stoneforge Mystic, then Pondered to find a Spell Pierce for the looming equipment. Theodore sensed it, and chose to hold his Batterskull rather than play it when he made his fifth land drop.
A string of Delver of Secrets came off the top for John, but Theodore Lightning Bolted each. John’s Dark Confidant was sent to the farm with a Swords to Plowshares, and he decided to pull the trigger on his Malestrom Pulse, getting rid of Theodore’s Rest in Peace and unlocking his Tarmogoyfs, then adding another to the board. The two Tarmogoyfs came swinging, and Theodore had no way to get rid of them.
