Quarterfinals: Josh Hand vs. Nick Loiacono
Two explosive combo decks meet up in the quarterfinals with Storm vs. Sneak and Show. Will Josh be able to chain together 10 spells before Nick attacks with giant flying monsters?
Josh hopes his remaining two goblins are enough.
“Storm is one,” Josh joked, but Nick had no other play.
Josh fetched an Underground Sea and played a Lotus Petal of his own. After the Petal resolved he went for a Duress, taking Spell Pierce, leaving Nick with a Force of Will with no blue card. Josh then used a Cabal Therapy to take the two copies of Griselbrand from Nick’s hand.
Nick simply played a Scalding Tarn and passed and Josh followed suit by playing a Volcanic Island and shipping the turn back. Nick resolved a Sneak Attack on his next turn but had no mana or monster to put into play. Josh opened his next turn with a Dark Ritual into a Cabal Therapy, naming “Force of Will” and saw a Gitaxian Probe in Nick’s hand. After the discard spell, Josh made six goblins with Empty the Warrens and sacrificed one of them to flash back Therapy to take the Probe.
Nick peeled a Brainstorm and found an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and put it into play and attacked. Josh scarified everything but two goblins and Nick passed the turn, losing his giant monster. Josh began the march, attacking for 2 to drop Nick to 16. Nick missed on his first draw and passed the turn. Josh found a Gitaxian Probe to see Nick’s new card was a Show and Tell then attacked Nick down to 14. Nick found a Ponder which chained into another Ponder and Nick chose to shuffle away the top three for a fresh one. Nick whiffed on the draw and fell to 12 on the next attack.
The goblins kept coming, dropping Nick to 10 as Josh found a Brainstorm. Josh took him to 7 after Nick fetched up a Volcanic Island and then again took a hit. Nick, at 5, found a Brainstorm then used a Gitaxian Probe to see Josh had no interaction, so he put in a Griselbrand with Sneak Attack to seal the deal.

Nick shows up to class with Griselbrand.
Josh started this game by paying two life for a Gitaxian Probe seeing two copies of Spell Pierce, Pyroblast, Fire/Ice, and two lands as Nick was on a mulligan to six. Following the Probe, Josh fetched an Island and began digging with a Ponder. Nick opened with a Volcanic Island and a freshly drawn Lotus Petal. Josh Probed again, seeing what he already knew, but drawing a card, then went to 14 to fetch a Swamp. Josh followed his fetch by playing Infernal Tutor, but Nick spent a Spell Pierce to prevent the tutor from happening.
Nick added his Ancient Tomb to the board and passed back. Josh tried to Ponder, but Nick fired off the Pyroblast to prevent him from looking any deeper. Nick untapped and played a Ponder of his own then lost two life to tap his Tomb and played Show and Tell. Josh Brainstormed in response, but the spell resolved and Nick put a Griselbrand into play then immediately drew seven cards off it.
Josh led his next turn with another Probe and saw Force of Will with plenty of blue spells to pitch to it, along with a Spell Pierce and a Pyroclasm. With that information, Josh Brainstormed then attempted a Lotus Petal, but Nick decided to use the Spell Pierce on it. Josh then played Cabal Therapy and took the Force of Will before passing the turn. During Nick’s upkeep, Josh used a Chain of Vapor on the Griselbrand so Nick drew seven cards in response, finding a Pyroblast to counter the bounce spell.
Nick played a Lotus Petal and sent in the demon to knock Josh to 5 then played two copies of Grafdigger’s Cage and an Island. Josh, facing down lethal from Griselbrand on the next turn, led off with a Dark Ritual into Infernal Tutor which found a Gitaxian Probe that he paid two life to play and Nick responded with Fire to drop Josh to 1. The Probe found a Brainstorm, but the Brainstorm didn’t provide any help and Josh extended the hand.
