Quarterfinals: Justin Haas vs. Jeremy Stowe
Dredge and RUG Delver are two of the more popular decks in Legacy, with RUG dominating the metagame in recent months while Dredge sniped the occasional Top 8 slot from an unsuspecting player or two. Jeremy had the Delvers, while Justin came with Golgari Grave-Troll.
Justin's Dredge list has taken him into the Top 8.
Each player started on six cards, with Justin playing City of Brass and Putrid Imp to start. Jeremy knew to fear what could happen from here, and started with fetching Volcanic Island and Forked Bolt on the Putrid Imp; in Justin's haste, he declined to respond with pitching a dredger. Faithless Looting after playing Cephalid Coliseum binned Golgari Grave-Troll and Bridge from below, and Justin ended his turn.
Wasteland on City of Brass destroyed that, and Jeremy passed with Volcanic untapped. Justin dredged up two Ichorids, another Imp, and three lands—he was officially stalled, and passed without a land drop. Good news for Jeremy! Jeremy had just a fetchland on his own turn, passing.
Exiling two Putrid Imps to get back both Ichorids, Justin swung for 6 damage and only got one Zombie, as Jeremy Stifled a trigger. Facing basically just the 2/2, Jeremy played another fetchland and passed. When Justin exiled one Ichorid to the other in order to attack for 5 damage, Jeremy again had Stifle to save himself from a Zombie.
Jeremy played Taiga and shipped—Justin found a big land in Gemstone Mine, now able to access Cephalid Coliseum. He declined to, casting Faithless Looting instead, and Jeremy was able to leverage Spell Pierce for some utility, though he fell to 6 when Justin attacked. That became 5 when Jeremy fetched Tropical Island.
He Brainstormed and cast Tarmogoyf, then fetched to 4 life for another Tropical Island in order to have one mana up—his Tarmogoyf was a 6/7. Justin drew another Gemstone Mine and cast Faithless Looting the third from his hand. On two cards, Jeremy Dazed—Justin paid for it, pitching Grave-Troll and Stinkweed Imp.
Then he cast Lion's Eye Diamond—oh, boy. He'd tapped his Coli for the Daze, but could still flashback Faithless Looting, which Jeremy Dazed unsuccessfully. Grave-Troll hit two Bridges, Dread Return, and Cabal Therapy, and then Imp hit a Narcomoeba.
That guy turned into three Zombies, flashbacking Cabal Therapy and naming whatever he wanted, since Jeremy had two lands in his hand. He flashbacked the Dread Return for an 8/8 Grave-Troll, and passed.
Jeremy didn't have anything that hot—just Delver of Secrets. Justin brought back Ichorid and then dredged a Grave-Troll. He swung, forcing Jeremy to chump with Delver and getting through 3 damage with Ichorid, leaving Jeremy on 1 life. Popping Coliseum, Justin went even deeper into the deck for two more Narcomoeba, another Ichorid, and his last Bridge.
Yeah, that was enough.

Jeremy led Nimble Mongoose on Tropical Island, while City of Brass and Lion's Eye Diamond did Justin some good, though his Putrid Imp met Daze. Jeremy Pondered, keeping three cards, and played Tormod's Crypt before attacking for 1 damage. Awkwardly, Justin played another City of Brass and cast Golgari Thug, trying to get down a blocker and future dredger. Jeremy added Tropical Island to the board and cast Ponder, then Delver of Secrets.
Cabal Therapy on Surgical Extraction missed, revealing Brainstorm, Force of Will, and Wasteland. Flashbacking the Therapy on Brainstorm, Justin put Putrid Imp atop his library. Jeremy triggered Delver on Lightning Bolt, and attacked for 4 damage. Falling to 8, Justin cast Stinkweed Imp—predictably, Jeremy Lightning Bolted and then Wastelanded his Tropical Island—he can Wasteland his Wasteland here, as an important note to readers, because with Justin on 2, Jeremy Crypted him and knew he was drawing Putrid Imp—that locked it up.

Jeremy has a tough fight ahead of him with RUG.
“Dredge is always scary,” Jeremy admitted as he shuffled up for the last game of the match. Each kept seven, with Justin on the play. Undiscovered Paradise and Faithless Looting from Justin, and Jeremy replied with Force of Will, removing Thought Scour. Tropical Island and Tormod's Crypt resolved for Jeremy, and he passed.
Justin cast Cabal Therapy to target himself, and met Spell Pierce—Undiscovered Paradise would bounce again. Making Delver of Secrets, Jeremy got a threat on the board next to his Crypt. No plays from Justin except for City of Brass, and Jeremy revealed Brainstorm to Delver for a flip, attacking Justin to 17.
He cast Brainstorm, then used Wasteland to destroy the City of Brass. “Back to the Undiscovered Paradise,” Justin announced, playing it and passing. He went to 14 when Jeremy attacked, but Jeremy had no other plays. Justin drew and dropped Gemstone Mine, then ended the turn. Jeremy attacked for 3 more, passing.
On 11, Justin needed to get going. He played Cephalid Coliseum, took 1, and cast Stinkweed Imp—Jeremy Dazed it to keep his Delver going, giving Justin a dredger. The Aberration swung Justin to 7 life, and Jeremy passed without using Crypt, seeking value. Justin dredged, hitting Grave-Troll, Looting, and another Narcomoeba—that earned the Crypt.
Replaying Paradise, Justin got his Stinkweed Imp Dazed again, falling to 6 life. Aberration attacked him to 3, and Force of Will made Jeremy a mortal lock in combination with the Stifle and other blue card in his hand already.
