Quarterfinals: Kevin Jones vs. Joey Manner
Kevin Jones was looking to solidify his Players’ Championship bid with an Open win using Jeskai Tempo, but he would face stiff quarterfinal opposition in the form of Joey Manner and his Mono-Green Devotion deck.
Kevin: “Red. White. Blue… attack you.”
Courser of Kruphix came down on turn 3 for Joey but provided no protection in the air, as Kevin dropped a second Mantis Rider into play on his following turn and dropped Joey down to 11. He went back up to 12 with a land drop, then played a morph. Kevin untapped, swung in for 6, and played Jeskai Charm to put Joey’s Courser of Kruphix back on top of his library.
Joey surveyed his hand and board. Knowing that the top card of his library would give him no help, he conceded the game.

A turn 1 Elvish Mystic enabled a turn 2 morph from Joey, potentially a Rattleclaw Mystic that would send his mana development into overdrive. Kevin didn’t want to risk it, and used a turn 2 Magma Jet to kill it. It did in fact turn out to be a Rattleclaw Mystic, but Joey had a replacement mana creature, a Sylvan Caryatid. Kevin was able to send him back to square one, however, with an Anger of the Gods.
Joey had no play for the next few turns, and Kevin got on board turn 5 with a Keranos, God of Storms. Joey matched him the following turn with a Nissa Worldwaker, animating a tapped Forest, but the Keranos revealed a Mantis Rider to deal 3 damage to the Nissa, and the Rider then entered play and served up another 3 to finish it off. Kevin used his remaining 3 mana his untapped Mantis Rider to fire off a Stoke the Flames, killing the 4/4 Forest and passing the turn in commanding position.
A 2/2 Genesis Hydra found Sylvan Caryatid for Joey, but it didn’t live through to the next untap step as Kevin revealed Dig through Time off of his Keranos. He cast the Dig Through Time to find a pair of burn spells, then dropped Kevin down to 13 with his Mantis Rider. When Joey had no play on his next turn, a Magma Jet and Lightning Strike at end step dropped him down to 8, and Kevin untapped and showed another Lightning Strike and a Stoke the Flames to finish the job.
