Quarterfinals: Mark Rankin vs. Greg Mitchell
There’s a ton of Delver decks in the elimination rounds and this matchup is no exception. Would Mark use RUG Delver to reach the semifinals or could Greg trump him with BUG Delver?
Mark sends his flyer into the red zone.
Mark fetched up a Volcanic+Island and played a turn-1 Delver+of+Secrets and Greg made Deathrite+Shaman his first play. Mark’s Delver flipped off a Force+of+Will and knocked Greg to 16. Mark fired off a Lightning+Bolt to kill the Shaman, but Greg used a Force+of+Will, pitching another copy of it, so Mark had to use his newly drawn Force+of+Will, pitching Delver+of+Secrets, to put an end to the Shaman.
Greg tried for a Tarmogoyf, but Mark had another Force for the creature. Mark untapped and slammed another Delver and attacked with his transformed one and passed with no second land drop. Greg Brainstormed on his next turn and fetched up a Tropical+Island to shuffle away the cards he didn’t want then passed with no other play.
Mark flipped his next Delver with a Daze and attacked with both flyers so Greg used an Abrupt+Decay on one and fell to 8. Greg played a Delver of his own and followed it up with a Deathrite+Shaman. Mark hit Greg for 3 more and found his second land, a Wasteland. Mark used it on an Underground+Sea and passed back.
Greg flipped his Delver with a Hymn+to+Tourach and then used it to make Mark pitch his two cards left. Mark drew and passed, not wanting to trade flyers. Greg went for a Sylvan+Library and Mark tried to Spell+Pierce it, but Greg had the Daze to get it into play. Greg exiled a creature to go up to 7 and untapped, used his Library, then hit the opposing 3/2 with a Disfigure and bashed for 3.
Mark Brainstormed and found a Scalding+Tarn and passed as Greg went up 9 with his Shaman. Greg attacked Mark down to 11 and used a Vendilion+Clique on Mark’s draw step to see two Tarmogoyfs that Greg let him keep. Mark fetched a Tropical+Island and played one of them and passed. Greg attacked with his flyers to drop Mark to 4 then used a Liliana+of+the+Veil to make Mark sacrifice his creature. Mark drew for the turn and picked up his cards.

Both kept their seven and Mark led off with a Scalding+Tarn. Greg bad a Bayou for his Deathrite+Shaman and passed. Mark fetched up a Volcanic+Island and attempted to Fork bolt the Shaman, but Greg had a Force+of+Will, pitching Brainstorm. Mark decided to use his Wasteland on the Bayou and passed. Mark went for another Forked+Bolt and this one resolved and killed the Shaman. Greg flipped his Delver off an Abrupt+Decay and hit Mark down to 16 with it. Greg ended his turn with a follow up Deathrite+Shaman. Mark decided to go for a Brainstorm, but he failed to find a land and shipped the turn.
Greg Brainstormed and cracked his Misty+Rainforest for a Tropical+Island so he could Ponder with a fresh top of his deck. Greg found a Wasteland to hit Mark’s Volcanic+Island so Mark went for a Submerge, but Dazed it and didn’t pay to save his land. Greg hit for 4 and passed. Mark replayed his land and used a Lightning+Bolt on the flyer and passed. Greg simply played a fetch land and passed. When Mark had no play Greg dropped him to 10 with a DRS activation.
Greg tried to hit Mark Volcanic with a Wasteland during his upkeep, but Mark had the Stifle and played a Tropical+Island. Greg again drained him for 2 with the Shaman, untapped and broke a fetch land so Mark tried to Submerge it in response, but Greg had a Spell+Pierce to avoid losing his creature to somewhere random in his deck. After fetching Greg resolved a Tarmogoyf and attacked Mark to 7.
Mark used a Lightning+Bolt on the Shaman and played a Misty+Rainforest and passed. Greg attacked with his Tarmogoyf to knock Mark to 3 then played a Delver+of+Secrets before passing. Mark went for a Brainstorm, “I’m going to need some good ones,” he said.
Mark played a Tropical+Island and passed with no play. Greg attacked with his team and Mark fetched in response for a Volcanic and flashed in a Vendilion+Clique, targeting himself to get rid of his Spell+Pierce for a Random card. But Greg had an Abrupt+Decay before blocks and Mark extended his hand.
