Quarterfinals: Nathan Calvin vs. Kevin Rand
Nathan came into the match as the higher seed and on the play with B/g Devotion while Kevin didn’t mind being on the draw with a good matchup for his Mono-Red Aggro deck. Would Nathan stabilize and get to use his Drown in Sorrows from his sideboard, or would Kevin burn him up with Firefist Striker and company?
Nathan wasn’t pleased in Game 1.
Nathan kicked things off with a Thoughtseize after shocking himself from an Overgrown Tomb and took a Firefist Striker from Kevin’s hand. Kevin played a Firedrinker Satyr off a Mountain and passed. Nathan had a turn-2 Pack Rat, while Kevin offered the trade with his Satyr, which, Nathan accepted, but Kevin used a Titan’s Strength to keep his Satyr and took 2 before adding a Legion Loyalist a bit late to the party.
Nathan missed his third land drop, but had another Pack Rat. Kevin attacked with his creatures and Nathan again put his Rat in front of the Satyr, so Kevin used another Titan’s Strength and hit Nathan for 1. Kevin ended his turn with a Firefist Striker while Nathan found a Swamp and passed with no play.
Kevin sent in his team, triggering battalion, and Nathan killed off the Loyalist with his Mutavault and fell to 11. Kevin dropped a Burning-Tree Emissary so Nathan responded with a Devour Flesh, which Kevin ditched the Satyr to, then Kevin used the mana to unleash a Rakdos Cackler.
Kevin went to attacks but Nathan had a Bile Blight for the Striker and dropped to 7 from the Cackler and BTE. Kevin had no further play and passed. Nathan played a Lifebane Zombie to see a Rubblebelt Maaka and passed. Kevin ripped a Legion Loyalist off the top and sent in his team with lethal thanks to a bloodrush from the Maaka.

Kevin shuffles up after taking the first game.
Nathan went down to six and warned Kevin that he hadn’t lost a game while on a mulligan on the day. Kevin laughed and tanked on his hand before saying, “good enough.”
Nathan thought about his six-card hand a while before keeping it and leading with a Temple of Malady. Kevin began Game 2 with a Firedrinker Satyr. Nathan went to 18 to play a Pack Rat and passed back. Kevin sent in the Satyr and Nathan snapped off the block and Kevin accepted the trade and played a Burning-Tree Emissary into a Firefist Striker and passed. Nathan missed on land three and passed.
Kevin sent his creatures into the red zone and Nathan used a Pharika’s Cure on the BTE then Kevin added an Eidolon of the Great Revel to his board. Nathan bricked on land again and passed. Kevin attacked with his team to drop Nathan to 14 and passed. Nathan found his third land, a Mutavault, and played Drown in Sorrow, taking 2, and Kevin kept his Eidolon alive with a Titan’s Strength then fired a Skullcrack at Nathan.
Kevin attacked with the Eidolon and bloodrushed it with a Rubblebelt Maaka then played a Firedrinker Satyr, taking 2 to do so. Nathan played a fourth land and shipped the turn, so Kevin attacked with his team, Nathan animated his Mutavault and blocked the Satyr and used a Hero’s Downfall on the Eidolon, Kevin showed another Skullcrack and Nathan extended the hand.
