Quarterfinals: Nick Spagnolo vs. Austin Yost
Piloting Burn, Austin had scorched through more than a few blue decks en route to the Top 8 today. Unfortunately for Nick Spagnolo, he appeared likely to be next on the list! His BUG deck was excellent against control and aggro, but the burn deck attacked him from an axis on which he was not well-equipped to fight.
Austin's burn deck has been blazing through his opponents.
“I can't win,†Nick sighed as Austin led Mountain and Figure of Destiny. Nick's Misty Rainforest featured no additional action, and Nick took 1 as the Figure attacked on turn 2. Keldon+Marauders earned Force+of+Will, removing Snapcaster+Mage, leaving Nick on just 18 life.
Figure+of+Destiny became a 2/2 and swung Nick to 16, Chain Lightning following afterward—Nick's fetch for Island and Spell+Pierce countered it. He fetched twice on his own turn, grabbing Underground+Sea and Bayou before casting Liliana+of+the+Veil to kill off Figure, relatively stable at 14 life. Still, Austin had a full grip…those spells could be dangerous. Hint: they were.
Flame+Rift ignored Liliana and went to Nick's face, but Austin had no land or other plays. Nick boosted Liliana, discarding pernicious Deed and widening his eyes as Austin pitched Price+of+Progress. Chain+Lightning and Flame+Rift put Nick down to 2 life, but his Force+of+Will for Fireblast gave him a precarious point of life against Austin's single Mountain. “I'm still dead to like any spell,†he sighed.
Never fear—Lava Spike is here.

Picking up his sideboard, Nick frowned. “This is embarrassing,†he admitted. He started game 2 on Underground+Sea, Spell Piercing Austin's turn 1 Chain+Lightning. Playing Mishra%27s+Factory, he Brainstormed after a second Chain+Lightning landed. Turn 3 saw Nick fetch for another Underground+Sea and pump Liliana+of+the+Veil, freshly cast. He binned Smother—Austin binned Mountain, and Bolted Liliana.
Nintendo enthusiast Nick Spagnolo sits down across from a bad matchup.
Price+of+Progress from Austin dealt Nick 6 damage, and left Austin on a scant two cards. Pumping Liliana, Nick discarded another Smother, holding onto Crucible+of+Worlds. He tried to Spell+Snare Flame+Rift, but Austin's Red Elemental Blast made it through and reduced Nick to 6 life. He played Crucible+of+Worlds, and ended the turn.
Austin drew another Lightning+Bolt, blasting Nick to 3 life, and ended the turn. Nick's Liliana moved to three loyalty as he discarded a land. Going to 1 in response to Keldon+Marauders, Nick fetched two lands in order to Snapcaster+Mage his Spell+Snare.
Attacking Austin to 10 life, he ended the turn. Austin likewise drew a card and passed, appearing out of gas now, and Nick Brainstormed during the end step before untapping. Liliana forced Austin to Pyroblast Snapcaster+Mage, and Mishra%27s+Factory clacked in to leave Austin on 8 life as Nick cast Standstill.
Lightning+Bolt broke Standstill and drew Nick into Counterspell—whew! He attacked Austin to 6, and then to 4—but Barbarian+Ring off the top ended the dream. “I have no shot against that deck!†Nick lamented.
