Quarterfinals: Oscar Jones vs. Josh McClain
“I just gave him my list and he copied it,” Josh said of Oscar. The friends were joking back and forth as they shuffled up for their match. As the higher seed, Oscar had the option and chose to play. Oscar kept his seven, while Josh mulliganed to six.
Oscar led with a tapped Overgrown Tomb and passed, while Josh went to 18 with an Overgrown Tomb into Noble Hierarch. Oscar played Razorverge Thicket and had Wall of Roots, while Josh on his turn had Abrupt Decay on the Wall of Roots and a Misty Rainforest.
Oscar went for Orzhov Pontiff, wiping out the Noble Hierarch, and Misty Rainforest searched up a Temple Garden on the end step. Josh found a Gavony Township but had to pass without a creature. Oscar, meanwhile, had a Verdant Catacombs and an attack with Orzhov Pontiff put Josh on 16 life.
Josh regrets that his path through the Top 8 would run through his friend.
Postcombat, Oscar found a Swamp and cast Murderous Redcap, reducing Josh on 14 life. On Josh’s turn, an Overgrown Tomb led to Birthing Pod, but Josh had Kitchen Finks to pad his life total and an attack with Murderous Redcap and Orzhov Pontiff to drop Josh on 11.
Josh had a Birds of Paradise on his turn, which he Podded away for a Wall of Roots, but Oscar had an Abrupt Decay on the end step to wipe out the Wall. On his turn, he activated Gavony Township and attacked with his team, putting Josh to 3. Josh found no help on his draw step and he scooped.
Oscar 1, Josh 0.
Josh had the option and chose to play. Both kept seven.
Josh opened on a tapped Godless Shrine, Oscar a tapped Temple Garden. Razorverge Thicket allowed Scavenger Ooze for Josh, while Oscar had a Verdant Catacombs. The Ooze drew first blood and Josh added a Kitchen Finks to his side of the board, putting the life totals 22-18 in his favor. A Razorverge Thicket led to a pass. It went to 22-17 when Oscar sacrificed his Catacombs for a Godless Shrine.
A basic Forest let Oscar cast Kitchen Finks, gaining two life. Josh had a basic Forest of his own and cast Qasali Pridemage, letting Kitchen Finks attack alone for four. Oscar went down to 14 life to get a basic Swamp off Verdant Catacombs number two and cast Murderous Redcap to off Scavenger Ooze, but Dismember disposed of Oscar’s Kitchen Finks and Scavenger Ooze kept the Finks from Persisting with a life-saving activation.
Oscar keeps his focus during his quarterfinal match.
Josh attacked with his whole team. Oscar blocked the Pridemage with his Redcap and another Ooze activation kept the Persist trigger from being fulfilled. Oscar had a Gavony Township on his turn and Linvala, Keeper of Silence, which induced some last-chance Scavenging from the Ooze.
On Josh’s turn he cast Noble Hierarch. A Kitchen Finks offered to trade with Linvala. Oscar took the damage instead, going to 4 life. Oscar fought back with a full-retail Shriekmaw , but a Call of the Conclave in response got Oscar to scoop without seeing what Josh would have tutored.
“So far the card Birthing Pod has not won a game,” Josh observed, drawing a chuckle from the two participants. Oscar had the option and chose to play. Oscar kept his seven, but Josh sent his first hand back, keeping six.
Oscar started with Forest and Noble Hierarch, while Josh had an identical start. Godless Shrine came down untapped, costing Oscar two life, and cast Kitchen Finks, but not before Oscar accidentally showed a Chord of Calling. Josh played a Misty Rainforest and cast Qasali Pridemage, going to 13 life to Dismember Oscar’s Hierarch.
Oscar’s Kitchen Finks attacked for three and he had a Birds of Paradise to follow up, though no land. Josh attacked for four, dropping Oscar to 16, and an evoked Shriekmaw offed the Hierarch. They traded damage, three points for four, until Josh cast Kitchen Finks and went to 9 life against Oscar’s 12.
Eternal Witness from Oscar returned Noble Hierarch. Josh spent his turn casting a Birds of Paradise and passing. Oscar found an Overgrown Tomb atop his deck and happily went to 10 life as he considered his options. He went for a Chord of Calling, X = 3, for a devastating Orzhov Pontiff.
Josh grimaced as he untapped and drew. Qasali Pridemage attacked for three, putting Oscar on 7 life, and Josh played Wall of Roots, but the tide seemed to have turned. Oscar cast Thoughtseize, going to 5 life, and stripped a Birthing Pod from Josh’s hand. A Noble Hierarch and Oscar passed.
Josh drew and passed, inducing a Call of the Conclave on the end step for Viscera Seer. Birthing Pod came down on Oscar’s turn and fetched up a Melira, Sylvok Outcast. Oscar, only on 3 life, had combo pieces and threatened lethality, but he passed.
Josh untapped, drew, and weighed his options. He went for Eternal Witness, tapping out, and Oscar responded by comboing off and gaining arbitrarily large life as well as setting the top card of his library. On his turn, Oscar cast Thoughtseize and Josh conceded.
Oscar Jones wins 2-1 and advances to the semifinals!
