Quarterfinals: Peter Chen vs. Jamie Kelly
Peter has made his way to our top seed with the only Heroic deck to make Day 2. Can he overcome a bad matchup in Jamie and his Mardu Dragons? Or will Stormbreath Dragon and company rule the skies?
As our first seed, Peter will go first and both players will keep their opening seven. Our Top 8 action starts at #SCGINDY!
Peter starts with a Lagonna-Band Trailblazer off of his Plains, and passes back to his opponent, who only has a tapped Nomad Outpost. Peter plays a Temple of Enlightenment into a Defiant Strike on his Trailblazer, attacking for two, and drawing a card.
Jamie decides to spend his second turn casting a Thoughtseize, taking Peter's Ordeal of Thassa, in hopes of slowing down his Bant Heroic opponent. Peter decides to just deploy more heroes, this time in the form of Favored Hoplite, and another attack with the Trailblazer for one damage. Jamie plays his third land, and passes, holding up all sorts of possible edict effects against his Heroic opponent.
An attack by both the Hoplite and Trailblazer leads into a Foul-Tongue Invocation, revealing a Stormbreath Dragon. Jamie gains his four life, and the Favored Hoplite is sacrificed. A Defiant Strike on the Trailblazer draws another card, deals a little bit of damage, and there is a pass of the turn by Peter.
Jamie plays his fourth land and plays a Soulfire Grand Master, and leaves two mana open. Peter plays a Seeker of the Way, but has no land to go with it. At the end of Peter's turn, Jamie casts Draconic Roar on the newly cast Seeker, dealing three damage to it and Peter, thanks to a Stormbreath Dragon being revealed. However, since Jamie has a Soulfire Grand Master in play, he also gains six life in the process! A pass back to Jamie, who plays a Seeker of his own, and a pass back, still holding up two mana.
Peter plays a Battlewise Hoplite, followed by a fetchland, but still does not make any attacks. Jamie tries a second Draconic Roar, this time on the Battlewise Hoplite, but a fetch for Plains in response, followed by a God's Willing, protects both Peter and his creature.
But not for long, as Jamie draws his fifth land, and slams a Stormbreath Dragon into play and into Peter, knocking his life total down to a precarious spot. Peter untaps, thinks a little bit, and simply passes the turn back. Jamie's Dragon shenanigans are not quite done yet though, as he dashes in a Kohlaghan, the Storm's Fury! Getting two +1/0 triggers to all of his creatures (thanks to both Kohlaghan and Strombreath Dragon attacking), Jamie has just enough to finish Peter off. Looks like we are dashing to Game 2!
Jamie won Game 1 and leads the match, 1-0!
After sideboarding, Peter will choose to go first. He keeps his opening seven, but Jamie is not as fortunate, having to mulligan to six.
Peter starts with a Temple of Enlightenment and a pass. Jamie fetches a basic Swamp with his Bloodstained Mire, followed by a Thoughtseize, taking Peter's only creature, Hero of Iroas. After such, both players play "land-go" for three turns in a row! Not what Peter wants to see!
Peter finally deploys a creature in the form of Favored Hoplite, but Jamie has the end step Ultimate Price to finish it off. Back to "land-go" we go! Both players trade land drops, until Jamie finally casts a Stormbreath Dragon, which Peter immediately casts Encase in Ice on. And we once again do nothing but play lands for several turns.
Once both players have six lands, Jamie finally plays a threat that can put a clock on his opponent – Seeker of the Way! This is met by much rejoicing from Peter, as he finally has a legal target for his Defiant Strike! That is right, he celebrated his opponent playing a creature because he could finally use his pump spells to draw a card.
A draw a card he did. Peter immediately deploys a Lagonna-Band Trailblazer and Monastery Mentor, followed by an Aqueous Form on the Trailblazer. Jamie tries to Draconic Roar the Mentor, but Peter has a God's Willing to save it.
But this is all for naught, as Jamie decides to hit the proverbial "reset button", by casting Crux of Fate, naming non-Dragons. And we are back to the only permenants in play being lands and a Stormbreath Dragon that is Encased in Ice.
Luckily, for Peter, he has a follow up in Hero of Iroas. But so does Jamie, in the form of Stormbreath Dragon. An attack and a pass by Jamie leaves him vunerable to the Hero, which gets double enchanted with Ordeal of Thassa and Ordeal of Heloid. An attack, two triggers, two cards, and 10 life later, and Peter passes the turn.
Jamie puts a stop to the Hero by making it pay the Ultimate Price, followed by another Stormbreath Dragon. But Peter has a second Encase in Ice! Peter also has a Favored Hoplite for his turn, but Jamie has a Crackling Doom and a Thunderbreak Regent as well.
Peter can only play another land as he sees the fate in front of him. A pre-combat Goblin Rabblemaster, followed by an attack with the Thunderbreak Regent and Goblin token is all the damage Jamie can do this turn. Peter draws for his turn, and extends his hand!
Jamie wins Game 2, and the match, 2-0!
