Quarterfinals: Peter Tragos vs. Jeremy Barbeau
Two very explosive combo decks were paired this round, with Peter Tragos in his second Top 8 in as many weeks. Jeremy Barbeau had brought “Oops, All Spells” to the tournament, a combo deck with no lands that used Innistrad’s mill mechanic for a Dread Return-fueled kill!
Peter started with Gitaxian Probe, revealing Tinder Wall, Chrome Mox, Dread Return, Cabal Ritual, Elvish Spirit Guide, Summoner’s Pact, and Dark Ritual. That was everything except for an actual kill spell... Peter jotted down the hand and then paid 2 more life for another Probe prior to fetching Underground Sea and casting Duress to take Summoner’s Pact.
Jeremy drew... and didn’t pass as predicted. He cast Chrome Mox to exile Cabal Ritual, and then used Spirit Guide to cast Tinder Wall before playing a Dark Ritual. His Tinder Wall became two red mana, and Jeremy cast his topdecked Balustrade Spy to put his deck into his graveyard, four Narcomoebas into play, and then flashbacked Cabal Therapy on himself.
Peter could only shake his head. “That was a good draw,” Jeremy admitted. “I’d say sorry about that, but you’d know I was lying.”
Jeremy pieces together his plan.
Jeremy 1, Peter 0
Keep for Peter, while Jeremy mulligans to six. “No lands again,” he complains, to the amusement of the gathered crowd. Peter started by fetching Underground Sea on turn 1 and casting Duress to see Balustrade Spy, Angel of Glory’s Rise, Dark Ritual, Summoner’s Pact, Lotus Petal, and Manamorphose—he lost the Lotus Petal and then Peter burned another Petal to take out the Dark Ritual.
Jeremy passed, and Peter used Cabal Therapy to strip Manamorphose and reveal that Jeremy had drawn a new Lotus Petal. He played the Petal on the next turn, casting Dark Ritual and then using Summoner’s Pact for Elvish Spirit Guide to cast Balustrade Spy—and that’s the game once more!
