Quarterfinals: Riley Curran vs. Per Nyström
Riley enters the quarterfinals as the top seed with Elves, while Per squeaked in as the No. 8 seed with Death and Taxes. Would Riley roll to victory like the matchup suggests or could the Swede pull the upset to reach the semifinals?

Riley kept seven while Per went down to five to start things off. Riley led off with a Forest from a fetch land and used a Green Sun’s Zenith to put a Dryad Arbor into play. Per had a Plains and no turn-1 play. Riley started turn-2 with an Elvish Visionary then used a Gaea’s Cradle to play a Wirewood Symbiote and replay the Visionary for another card.
Per played a Rishadan Port and tapped the Cradle during Riley’s upkeep. Riley played a flurry of elves including two Deathrite Shamans, Heritage Druid, and another Dryad Arbor. Per had a Spirit of the Labyrinth, but Riley cast a Craterhoof Behemoth and the game was over like that.

Both kept seven and Per had a Plains with no play and Riley played a Deathrite Shaman. Per used a Swords to Plowshares on the Shaman at the end of turn, then untapped and played Stoneforge Mystic that fetched up an Umezawa’s Jitte. Riley added a Quirion Ranger and passed. Per opted for a Phyrexian Revoker that shut down the Ranger and passed back as Riley fetched a Dryad Arbor at the end of the turn.
Riley untapped and played a Green Sun’s Zenith for one getting a Wirewood Symbiote and powered out a Llanowar Elf. Per used another Swords on the Symbiote at end of turn to put Riley back at 20. Per dropped a Wasteland and equipped the SFM with the Jitte and killed the Llanowar Elf with it. Riley looked to go big with a Glimpse of Nature, but only got two creatures and two cards out of the deal. Per attacked again with the SFM to knock Riley to 18. Per ended his turn by adding an Aether Vial, killing off the Arbor and a Quirion Ranger and using a Wasteland on Riley’s Bayou.
Riley attacked with his Nettle Sentinel, but had no other play. Per dropped Riley to 13 and killed off another creature with the Jitte and kept Riley’s lone Forest tapped in his upkeep with a Port. Riley found a Misty Rainforest, but passed with no play. Per attacked with the team and dropped Riley to 10 with one use of the Jitte. Riley could muster no play and Per Vialed in a Spirit of the Labyrinth which prompted Riley to pick up his cards.

Both players decided to drop down to six cards and Riley started things off with a Deathrite Shaman off a Bayou. Per had a turn-1 Aether Vial off a Plains. Riley added a second Shaman and a Dryad Arbor then attacked for one. Per played a Pithing Needle on Deathrite Shaman then killed the Dryad Arbor with a Wasteland before passing. Riley played a Viridian Shaman to blow up the Needle and a Heritage Druid and Per Vialed in a Mother of Runes. Per continued the disruption with a Revoker on Heritage Druid. Riley added a Symbiote and a third Deathrite to his board before passing. Per Vialed in a SFM, getting a Jitte at end of turn. Per played a land then used his Port to tap the Bayou in Riley’s upkeep. Riley squeaked in two damage with a Deathrite in response and passed with no land or play.
Per played and equipped the Jitte on the Revoker and attacked Riley down to 18. Per used the Jitte to kill the Symbiote and the Heritage Druid. Riley passed again with no play and just three Deathrite Shamans in play. Per kept giving the Revoker protection from green and bashing in for two. He added another mom to his board and kept tapping the Bayou in Riley’s upkeep. Riley passed after drawing as Per kept killing off his creatures with the Jitte.
Per dropped Riley to 13 with the Revoker then killed another Shaman, keeping Riley in the lock. Riley fell to 10 from Per’s next attack as he couldn’t find mana to add anything to his board. Per killed off the last Shaman and bashed in for four and kept the Bayou tapped. Riley drew for the turn and extended the hand after not seeing another land.
