Quarterfinals: Ryan Archer vs. Joseph Edens
A green mirror in the first single elimination round say Ryan’s token-based Selesnya Aggro deck squaring off against Colossal Gruul.
Ryan evolves his way through the first game.
Ryan began with Experiment One, while Joseph played a tapped Stomping Grounds. Fleecemane Lion grew the Experiment, and that took Joseph down to 18 life. He had two Burning-Tree Emissary on turn 2, but nothing to use the mana on besides the pair of 2/2 creatures. Meanwhile, Ryan took 2 damage for a shockland but had no effect when Joseph doubled up on his Lion.
Adding a second Experiment and then Voice to the board, Ryan had a lot of 2/2s. Sylvan Caryatid off the top from Joseph was an ideal blocker, but Ryan upped the ante with Polukranos to evolve everyone. Joseph traded his Emissary with the Voice, growing each Experiment to 4/4 after combat—Ryan had 17 power on the board, and Joseph was behind!
He played his own Polukranos, but that wasn’t going to be nearly enough. He took 8 on the next swing, losing all of his creatures and falling to 2 life before Ryan finished the job on the next turn.
Joseph couldn't manipulate Domri effectively.

Each player began with tapped shocklands, Joseph failing to make a two-drop while Ryan cast Voice of Resurgence. Domri Rade on turn 3 and a missed activation ended things for Joseph, but Ryan couldn’t capitalize with a lethal swing on the planeswalker. He put Domri to one and then played Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage.
Joseph cast Polukranos to defend the planeswalker, and whiffed when he pumped Domri. Ryan sent in both creatures, trading his Guildmage for Domri before casting his own Polukranos. Joseph attacked for 5 damage and cast Domri afterward, trading Hydras with Ryan but losing his planeswalker immediately to the Voice still on the board. Ryan followed up with the dominating Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice.
Another Polukranos wasn’t likely to match her in a long game, but it was a start. Ryan swung with his Voice, and Joseph blocked—that gave Ryan an Elemental token to begin populating. Joseph attempt to use a monstrous activation and Mizzium Mortars to kill the legendary creature, but Ryan had Rootborn Defenses to save the Trostani and make a new Elemental token as well. Joseph forgot about the indestructible on the Elementals, and then lost his Polukranos in combat as well.
Battling with all his creatures after populating, Ryan put Joseph in range of an alpha on the next turn, and he couldn’t draw out.
