Quarterfinals: Scott Metcalf vs. Michael Sammut
Scott had the top seed and will use being on the play to his advantage with G/W Aggro. Can his slew of creatures get past Michael’s Jund Monsters?
Scott sideboards after winning Game 1.
Scott kicked things off with an Experiment One from a Mana Confluence and a centaur token from Call of the Conclave to evolve the ooze and attack for 2 while Michael had a Temple of Abandon. Michael’s first play was a Sylvan Caryatid to attempt to stem the bleeding. But Scott slammed an Ajani, Caller of the Pride and made the ooze bigger and attacked through for 6.
Michael used a Dreadbore to deal with the Planeswalker and killed off the centaur token with a Mizzium Mortars so Scott attacked and made a 5/5 Wurm before damage to evolve the ooze and knock Michael down to 8. Michael played a Courser of Kruphix and got a free land off the top and passed. Scott sent his creatures into the red zone and Michael put the Courser in front of the Wurm to soak up four points of damage, but Scott flashed in another Wurm to knock Michael to 2. Michael looked at his next draw and picked up his cards.

Michael considers his next play.
Michael, on the play this time, led with an Elvish Mystic off a Forest and Scott failed to find a Turn-1 play. Michael landed a Scavenging Ooze and Scott matched him with a Voice of Resurgence. Michael killed the front end of the Voice with a Dreadbore and attacked with his creatures and ate the Voice from the graveyard to knock Scott to 15.
Scott went to 14 from Mana Confluence and used a Banishing Light to get rid of the Ooze and served in for 1. Michael only had a land for his turn and passed back, declining to attack with the Mystic. Scott went down to 13 to play Call of the Conclave then attacked with the Elemental token. Michael killed the Elemental with Doom Blade so Scott rebuilt with a Fleecemane Lion. Michael found a Courser of Kruphix and killed off the Lion with a Hero’s Downfall.
Scott sent in the centaur and Michael blocked so he had to use a Selesnya Charm to keep the 3/3 alive and deal a point of trample damage. Michael had no play once again so Scott served in for 3 and played another Lion. Michael fired off a Mizzium Mortars on the Lion, but Scott had Rootborn Defense to keep it alive and get another centaur off the populate bonus. Michael played another Courser and passed with a Scavenging Ooze on top of his library.
Scott attacked with his 3/3s and Michael put a Courser in front of one and the Mystic in front of another so Scott made the Lion monstrous and knocked Michael to 11. Michael deployed the known Ooze and attacked Scott to 5 with Courser then grew the Ooze and his life total to 13 by eating two creatures from Scott’s graveyard. Scott pondered his lines and decided to attack with the Lion and both centaurs and Michael put the Ooze in front of a centaur so Scott used a Selesnya Charm to pump a Centaur and Michael grew the Ooze so Scott used a Charm to exile the Ooze and knock Michael to 1. Michael played a Caryatid and passed, but it wasn’t enough to stop Scott’s three creatures.
