Quarterfinals: Stacy Winchell vs. Wayne Tam
In a combo-filled Top 8, Stacy brings ANT to the table while Wayne comes packing giant monsters in his Sneak and Show deck. Which degenerate build would move on to the semifinals?
Stacy cracks a smile after Game 1.
Stacy kept his seven on the play, while Wayne went down to six. Stacy started things off with an Island off a Scalding Tarn to cast a Preordain. Wayne dropped a Flooded Strand and passed. Stacy continued cantripping, this time with a Brainstorm, then played and cracked a Flooded Strand to shuffle away the top two and get an Underground Sea. Wayne fetched up a Volcanic Island at the same time Stacy played Duress so he could Spell Pierce the discard spell.
Wayne played a Polluted Delta and a Lotus Petal and passed back, Stacy started turn 3 with a Ponder and went for a second Duress,Wayne responded with a Brainstorm and allowed the Duress to resolve after hiding two cards on top. Stacy had no card to take after seeing three lands and an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Stacy fetched up another Underground Sea and used a Cabal Therapy to get rid of the Eldrazi and make Wayen shuffle his library.
Wayne played an Island and passed. Stacy Preordained and started his storm count then played a Lion’s Eye Diamond and a Dark Ritual before casting his last card in hand, an Infernal Tutor Stacy searched for a card after forgetting to maintain priority and crack the Diamond, then passed the turn.
“Awkward,” Stacy said.
Wayne opened his turn with a main-phased Brainstorm then played an Ancient Tomb and cast Show and Tell putting a Griselbrand into play, while Stacy just had an Ad Nauseam in hand. Stacy drew and cracked his Polluted Delta for a Swamp then cast Ad Nauseam. Wayne drew seven in response and Stacy remembered to crack his Diamond for mana and Wayne drew seven more.
Stacy began Ad Nauseam at 15 and started turning over cards. Stacy dropped to 2 after seeing a handful of cards and began doing some math. Stacy used double Dark Ritual, into Cabal Ritual then played Tendrils of Agony for enough to make Wayne scoop up his cards.
“No Force of Wills…” Wayne lamented as he looked at his handful of cards.

Both kept seven this time and Wayne started things off with a Ponder off a Volcanic Island. Stacy cracked a Flooded Strand for a Tropical Island and cast Carpet of Flowers then used the mana for Cabal Therapy, naming “Force of Will.” Stacy missed and saw a hand poised to put a giant monster into play on turn 2 thanks to a Sol land.
Wayne dropped the City of Traitors and resolved a Show and Tell to put a Griselband into play, while Stacy got a free Polluted Delta. Wayne passed and Stacy cracked the fetch land for an Underground Sea.
Stacy passed and Wayne drew seven cards. Wayne untapped and started thinking. He decided on attacking for seven and going back up to 20 then went to discard after considering multiple plays.
Stacy played a Scalding Tarn and passed with no action, while Wayne drew seven more cards at the end of the turn. Wayne knocked Stacy down to 4 then discarded down to seven cards while Stacy fetched up a Volcanic Island.
Stacy Brainstormed and played a second Carpet of Flowers. He went to his second main phase to get two black mana and used one of it to cast Duress that Wayne allowed to resolve and then took a Swan Song from his grip. Stacy played Preordain as his third spell and conceded the game after his draw.

Wayne gears up for Game 3.
Both kept seven and Stacy led things off with a Carpet of Flowers off a Tropical Island. Wayne played a Scalding Tarn and passed. Stacy played a Swamp and paid two life to play Gitaxian Probe and see Wayne’s hand full of monsters, Blood Moon, Spell Pierce, a Sol land, and a Brainstorm. Stacy then cast Cabal Therapy and Wayne allowed it. Stacy chose Spell Pierce and added a second copy of Carpet of Flowers to his board before passing. Wayne fetched up a Volcanic Island and Brainstormed at the end of the turn.
Wayne untapped and took two damage from an Ancient Tomb to play Blood Moon and shipped he turn back. Stacy, with two useless Carpet of Flowers, tapped his Swamp to cast Duress and took Sneak Attack and passed. Wayne drew and slammed a Mountain and passed. Stacy tapped his Swamp and cast Cabal Therapy naming and hitting the Swan Song and passed the turn.
Wayne played another “Mountain” and passed back. Wayne drew and slammed a Show and Tell and got his Griselbrand into play. Stacy untapped and got two mana from his now active Carpet of Flowers and started things off with a Ponder. After his draw, Stacy played a Lion’s Eye Diamond and tapped his Swamp to play Dark Ritual and played a Duress to see an Emrakul in Wayne’s hand. Stacy went for a Tendrils of Agony with a storm of five. Wayne allowed it and dropped to 7 while Stacy went to 28.
Wayne untapped and attacked for seven and passed. Stacy drew and used his Carpet of Flowers for blue and black then played a Lotus Petal and played Infernal Tutor, Wayne responded by drawing seven and found a Force of Will for the Tutor and Stacy passed the turn. Wayne played a Mountain and followed it up with a Sneak Attack and landed an Emrakul to bash in for lethal.
