Quarterfinals: Timothy Thomason vs. Carson Long
It's doubtful that either player tested this matchup between Timothy's Goblins and Carson's Muddy Stax, so it was going to be fun to watch them prod each other's defenses as they felt out the opposing game plan.
Timothy Thomason's Goblins are looking to swarm the Top 8.
We didn't have to wait long to see what Carson was up to. After Timothy took a mulligan, Carson fired out City of Traitors, Grim Monolith and Mox Diamond, ramping into a first turn Smokestack. Tim grimaced, unsure of what to do. He settled on Badlands and Aether Vial, but was immediately crushed by Wasteland and Smokestack as Carson finished off his powerful start with Crucible of Worlds.
Tim tried to battle back with a Mountain and Goblin Lackey, but Smokestack again picked them off as Crucible of Worlds rebuilt Carson's board. A pair of Wurmcoil Engines arrived a few turns later and Timothy was unable to stop them with his severely limited resources.
Carson 1, Timothy 0
Tim led with another Aether Vial for the second game and Carson's Wasteland start was much less exciting than the last game's. Rishadan Port locked it down on upkeep and Carson whiffed on a second land, discarding Chalice of the Void after Goblin Lackey entered play.
Carson Long studying hard for his quarterfinal matchup.
The lackey fired up Goblin Ringleader, netting Tim two Mogg War Marshal and Goblin Matron. A second Aether Vial kept Tim's production going even as Wasteland razed the Rishadan Port. City of Traitors into Grim Monolith set Carson up for some shenanigans on the next turn, but Tim was ready to manually Empty the Warrens on his own turn. He vialed in Mogg War Marshal on end step and untapping into a Vialed Goblin Warchief. Goblin Matron for Goblin Ringleader followed and the horde of Goblins smashed in for eight.
Carson looked to buy time with two Tangle Wires on the next turn, but Tim had already solved the puzzle. He activated his larger Aether Vial with the Tangle Wires on the stack, netting Goblin Piledriver before tapping eight goblins. Goblin Piledriver, Mogg War Marshal and Warren Weirding provided enough hasty damage to finish the job before Carson could recover.
Carson 1, Timothy 1
After taking the second game off, Carson had another explosive start with Chalice of the Void for one off of Mox Diamond. He followed up with Metalworker into Lodestone Golem against the suddenly crippled goblin deck. Goblin Piledriver and Goblin Warchief struggled to keep up, and when two Phyrexian Metamorphs followed cloning Lodestone Golem, Tim could see the writing on the wall. He could only afford enough for a Mogg War Marshal to find some blocks, but his hand was locked out of action due to Chalice of the Void. The Lodestone Golems finished the job.
Carson wins the match 2-1
