Quarterfinals: Will Cruse vs. Devon Oâ€™Donnell
A Delver matchup in the elimination rounds doesn’t come as surprise, but the types of Delver decks is slightly different than usual. BUG Delver in the hands of Devon O’Donnell squares off against 4-Color Delver by Will Cruse – leaving RUG and U//W/R Delver on the outside looking in. Which player gets to move on to the semifinals to play Tom Ross?
Devon ponders his next play.
Will, on the play for the match, threw away his six-land opener, and kept his mulligan while Devon was happy with his seven. Will just had a Tropical Island to start things off and Devon had a Delver of Secrets. Will used a Wasteland on Devon’s Underground Sea and attempted a Delver of his own but Devon had a Force of Will, pitching Stifle. Devon flipped his Delver with a Gitaxian Probe, attacked for 3, and took a look at Will’s hand and saw two lands and two copies of Force of Will. After the Probe, Devon Pondered and decided to shuffle away the three for a fresh card off the top.
Will played and cracked his Misty Rainforest for a Volcanic Island and used a freshly drawn Lightning Bolt on the Insectile Aberration. Devon untapped and played another Delver and an Underground Sea and shipped the turn. Will paid a blue for a Probe of his own to see a handful of counter magic for Devon. Will used a Wasteland on the Underground Sea and passed the turn. Devon failed to flip the Delver, attacked for 1, and played a Deathrite Shaman that Will tried to Force of Will, but Devon used his own Force, pithing Spell Pierce, to resolve the elf.
Will passed after playing a land and Devon attacked with his creatures before passing. Will had another turn of no action and Devon flipped his Delver with an Abrupt Decay before serving in with the 3/2. With the clock ticking, Will looked for answers, but passed with no action and Devon ate William’s dead Delver with the DRS to go to 16. After the DRS activation, Will went for Snapcaster Mage, which targeted Lightning Bolt, and Will used it on the flyer, after paying for one extra for Devon’s Daze.
Devon used a Wasteland on Will’s Tropical Island and played another DRS before passing. Will attacked Devon to 14 with the 2/1 and played a Deathrite Shaman of his own. Devon killed Will’s DRS with an Abrupt Decay after getting mane off his own Shaman and passed. Will started his next turn by Pondering, which he opted to shuffle with, then Probed again to see a Tropical Island in Devon’s hand, but more importantly, no answer off the top of his deck. Facing down the two Shamans, Will picked up his cards.

Both were happy with their openers this time and Will led with a Misty Rainforest while Devon resolved a Delver of Secrets. Will went for an end-of-turn Brainstorm, but Devon had the Daze. Will played his own Delver and a Wasteland and passed. Devon flipped his Delver thanks to Abrupt Decay and attacked for 3. Devon played a Polluted Delta and passed. Will flipped his Delver off a Brainstorm and attacked for 3 and shipped the turn.
Devon attacked again with his 3/2, cracked a Delta and Will tried to Stifle it so Devon responded by cracking another Delta, getting an Underground Sea, then let the Stifle resolve. Devon tried for another Delver so Will responded by using the Wasteland on Devon’s Sea then countered it with Daze. Will cracked in for three and replayed his Volcanic Island and passed. Devon played a Tropical Island and Pondered, so Will Brainstormed in response before letting it resolve. Devon shuffled away the top three and got a fresh one before attacking Will down to 10. Will knocked Devon to 9 with his 3/2 and played a backup Delver.
Devon Brainstormed in his main phase, but Will decided to counter it with Force of Will, pitching another Force, falling to 9. Devon with no other land passed. Will flipped his other Delver with Stifle and attacked with both and Devon traded with one of them. Devon paid two life to Probe Will and saw Lightning Bolt and Stifle and scooped up his cards after his draw off the Probe.

Both kept seven and Devon, on the play for the first time, led with a Ponder. Will paid two life for a Gitaxian Probe, seeing a handful of reactive spells, but no threats from Devon. Will fetched up a Tropical Island and played Delver of Secrets. Devon hesitated before letting it resolve, untapped and fetched up an Underground Sea, and played a Tarmogoyf. Will failed to flip his Delver and used a Wasteland on Devon’s Underground.
Devon started his next turn by Pondering then attacked Will to 15. Will flipped his Delver with a Ponder and played it after adding Volcanic Island to his board. Will shuffled the Ponder and knocked Devon to 16. Devon Brainstormed and attacked Will to 12. Devon then went for a Wasteland on Will’s Volcanic Island so he tried to Brainstorm in response, but Devon Dazed it. Will attacked for 3 in the air and tried to resolve Young Pyromancer, but Devon had another Daze.
Devon attacked for 4 and passed with no other action. Will started his turn with a Probe falling to 6 to see a bunch of counter-magic and hand manipulation. Will resolved another Delver and attacked with his 3/2 and passed so Devon Brainstormed at the end of the turn. Devon attacked with the Tarmogoyf and Will took it, falling to 2. Devon went for a Wasteland on Will’s red source so Will sent a Lightning Bolt to Devon’s head before losing the Volcanic Island. Devon added Deathrite Shaman to his board and passed the turn.
Will flipped his second Delver with a Lightning Bolt, but he didn’t have the land to cast it and kill the Shaman so he picked up his cards.
Devon 2, Will 1
Both players liked their opener and Will began the game with a Gitaxian Probe to see a couple Force of Wills, Ponder, Toxic Deluge, and three lands. Will fetched up an Underground Sea after seeing his opponent’s hand and played Deathrite Shaman that Devon allowed to resolve. Devon considered his options before playing Ponder, opting to shuffle away the top three. Will decided to Ponder next, play a Volcanic Island, and pass without attacking. Devon led with a Verdant Catacombs then went for a Delver of Secrets and passed. Will went for an end-of-turn Lightning Bolt on the Delver so Devon went to fetch in response so Will used DRS to make a mana for a Stifle, but Devon had the Daze to prevent himself from getting his land destroyed. After the dust settled, the Delver was dead. Will tried to use a Wasteland on the Underground Sea on his next turn, but Devon had a Stifle to keep his land around. Will again passed with no action.
Devon added a Tropical Island to his board and passed so Will drained Devon for 2 with the DRS. Will untapped and Pondered, shuffle away three, and passed with no action. Devon dropped a Wasteland and resolved a Tarmogoyf. Devon used the Wasteland on Will’s Underground Sea, so Will responded by draining Devon for 2 with the Shaman. Will drew and a card and passed. Devon resolved a True-Name Nemesis so Will used DRS to make a mana to Lightning Bolt Devon.
Will went for a Snapcaster Mage, but didn’t have the mana to play a spell and shook his head after realizing he got rid of his Probe earlier with the DRS. Devon attacked with his team and Will shook his head, upset with himself, and picked up his cards.
