Round 10: Gerry Thompson (U/W Delver) vs. Dustin Taylor (U/W Delver)
Dustin Taylor has to consider his options while piloting U/W Delver.
The two Delver players bantered before the start of their match, clearly enjoying themselves on Invitational Day Two. Gerry was X-1, while Dustin was paired up at X-2.
Dustin started strong with a Delver of Secrets on one, and Gerry matched, not skipping a beat. The Delvers traded off when Dustin swung in, and the two made land drops for a couple turns; Gerry broke the silence with Geist of Saint Traft on three.
Restoration Angel came down when Gerry was tapped out. "Understandable," Gerry commented.
When Gerry flashed in his own to save Geist from blocks, Dustin said, "That's also understandable."
Dustin had four cards in hand with 16 life, and the two declined to attack for a turn cycle. Gerry Gitaxian Probed, paying two life. "You're going to like this one," Dustin claimed, showing off three lands and a Mana. "Secret's out now!"
Gerry chuckled, then Vapor Snagged Dustin's Restoration Angel back to his hand. Dustin still had six lands open. Gerry attacked with everyone, repping a Mana Leak by saying, "Should've played that Cavern, buddy." Did he in fact have it?

Dustin started again, without the Delver of Secrets this time. Gerry Pondered, then Pondered again on his second turn. He then played his second land to cast Delver of Secrets. A quick Gut Shot from Dustin picked it off. Dustin landed Geist of Saint Traft on his third turn.
Gerry Thompson, enjoying himself in the Delver mirror. Perhaps it's why he's X-1.
Gerry tapped three for his own Geist the turn after, and Dustin flashed in Restoration Angel.
Dustin started off his turn with Ponder, then Gitaxian Probe. Gerry showed Timely Reinforcements, Geist of Saint Traft, Thought Scour, and Glacial Fortress. Then Dustin passed the turn back to Gerry. Gerry played Seachrome Coast and passed as well. Dustin used Snapcaster Mage on his turn to flashback Ponder, looking for gas. He found another copy of Geist of Saint Traft to kill off Gerry's.
Gerry then used Timely Reinforcements to make three Soldiers (versus Dustin's Snapcaster Mage and Restoration Angel) and go up to 23. Gerry then cast Geist of Saint Traft with his three remaining mana.
Dustin swung in with Restoration Angel on his turn, putting Gerry back down to 20 with Dustin at 18.
Sword of War and Peace entered the battlefield on Gerry's side, and he equipped it to his Geist. Everything came in, and it looked like a total of eleven damage, with an additional three if Dustin kept all the cards in his hand.
The two Angels put Gerry to 14 life, and Gerry again swung with everyone. Snapcaster Mage blocked Geist again, and Dustin went down to 4. Unfortunately, he had no more outs and conceded.
"I usually take my Swords out," Gerry commented after the match. You can never know for sure what level to put Gerry Thompson on.
