Round 11: Steve Rubin vs. Josh Ravitz
Kolaghan's Command is a popular card for the weekend, and is being played in several different decks. Which one will reign supreme this round: Steve Rubin and Grixis Delver or Josh Ravitz and Jund?
Josh Ravitz and Steve Rubin are ready to battle!
Josh wins the die roll, allowing him to play first. Both players keep their opening seven, and Josh leads with a fetchland into a Blood Crypt, paying three life in the process. He then casts a Thoughtseize, dropping his life total to fifteen on the first turn! Welcome to Modern! He takes Steve's Snapcaster Mage, and passes the turn.
Unfortunately, Steve draws a Dispel for his turn, which is one of his sideboard cards. After a judge call, Steve receives a game loss, and we are on to sideboards.
Josh wins Game 1 and leads the match, 1-0!
Steve chooses to play, lamenting his mistake but hoping to take the next two games. The bad luck continues for Steve, as he mulligans down to five cards. Josh keeps his opening seven.
Steve Rubin assembles an army!
Steve does have a powerful play for his first turn, fetching Steam Vents and playing a Delver of Secrets, just like his deck wants to be doing. Josh punished Steve's mulligan by casting an Inquisition of Kozilek, taking Steve's Remand and leaving him with two cards.
Steve's Delver of Secrets refuses to transform, and an attack for one and a landdrop is all Steve can manage for the turn. A second Inquisition of Kozilek makes Steve cast his Snapcaster Mage in response, but losing his Mana Leak in the process. Josh plays a Raging Ravine and passes his turn, his opponent now drawing off the top for the rest of the game.
The Delver still does not flip, and Steve attacks with his creatures and passes. Josh plays both a Grim Lavamancer and Scavenging Ooze for his turn, trying to put the pressure on Steve. Once again, for Steve's turn, his Delver does not flip, so he casts a second copy and passes.
Josh casts his third Inquisition of Kozilek, taking a Vendilion Clique from Steve and then passes, leaving up mana to deal with Steve's board. However, the Delver still does not flip, but Steve does have a Tasigur, the Golden Fang for his turn. But it is quickly dealt with by Josh, as he has a Terminate for the Legendary Shaman, followed by exiling the creature from Steve's graveyard with his Scavenging Ooze and an attack. Finally, Josh kills one of Steve's Delvers with his Grim Lavamancer.
The Delver finally flips for Steve with a Lightning Bolt, but he leaves it back to block Josh's large Scavenging Ooze. An attempt to fetch at the end of turn by Josh allows Steve to kill Josh's Grim Lavamancer without much of a fight. However, on Josh's turn, we have an attack by a large Scavenging Ooze, which is double blocked by a Snapcaster Mage and a Insectile Aberration. This followed up by a second Scavenging Ooze and a Kitchen Finks by Josh.
Josh Ravitz attacks for the win!
Josh wins Game 2, and the match, 2-0!
