Round 14: Brad Nelson (11-1-1) vs. Dylan Klett (11-2)
Dylan won the die roll and chose to play, but two cards stuck together in his opening hand and he accidentally drew eight cards. After shuffling two back in, he chose to mulligan and went to five. Brad kept his full grip of seven.
Dylan led off with a tapped Secluded Glen, while Brad went Island, Serum Visions and sent the cards to the bottom. Dylan’s next play was Inquisition of Kozilek, revealing Scavenging Ooze, Remand, Splinter Twin, Flame Slash, Scalding Tarn, Scalding Tarn, and Serum Visions. Remand went to the graveyard.
Dylan played an untapped Watery Grave, going to 18, and passed. On Brad’s turn, he sacrificed Scalding Tarn and fetched out a tapped Stomping Ground after considerable thought. The second Serum Visions sent the scryed cards to the bottom once more.
Dylan had a Mutavault and passed. Brad played a Scalding Tarn and cast Scavenging Ooze, which resolved, but Dylan paid two mana and two life to Dismember it on the end step. Dylan had a Ghost Quarter for his turn and passed. In the end step, Brad fetched up a Steam Vents, putting the life totals at Brad 18, Dylan 16.
Brad looks to his sideboard before Game 2.
A second Scavenging Ooze from Brad met a Spellstutter Sprite, but Dylan did not activate his Mutavault until after Spellstutter Sprite resolved, meaning the Scavenging Ooze resolved, but Dylan again had removal. Snapcaster Mage flashed back a Serum Visions and a fourth land came down.
Spellstutter Sprite attacked for one. A third Serum Visions for Brad kept digging for action. A Flame Slash on Spellstutter Sprite induced Spell Pierce, but in the end the Flame Slash resolved. Snapcaster Mage began attacking for two and Dylan had lands but no good answers until he was down to 8 life.
On the upkeep Brad attempted a Lightning Bolt at Dylan’s face, which met a Spellstutter Sprite, but Cryptic Command countered the Sprite and drew a card. Dylan, on 1 life, had only a River of Tears and passed. Another Lightning Bolt from Brad and a flashed Snapcaster Mage induced the concession.
Brad 1, Dylan 0.
Dylan chose to play. Both players kept seven.
Dylan led with Creeping Tar Pit, while Brad once more began with Island, Serum Visions, this time keeping one card on top and putting one on the bottom of his library. Dylan followed up with Secluded Glen, showing Bitterblossom, which he then cast.
Brad used his turn to play a Hinterland Harbor and a Tarmogoyf. On the upkeep Dylan went to 19, making a token, and in the main phase he played Mutavault and spent four life to Dismember a Tarmogoyf, going to 15.
Brad untapped and gave his position some thought. He played a Misty Rainforest and then cast Snapcaster Mage, which resolved. He searched up a Steam Vents, which he had come into play untapped, going to 17 to cast Serum Visions from his graveyard.
Dylan untapped, went to 14 on the Bitterblossom trigger, and drew. He played a second Mutavault and attacked with his older Faerie token, putting Brad on 16 life, before casting and resolving Sword of Feast and Famine.
Brad played Engineered Explosives for zero, a menace to Dylan’s Faerie tokens, and passed. Dylan went to 13 on his upkeep, made a token, drew, and went into the tank. He attached the Sword to one token and attacked with two, but Brad sacrificed his Explosives to take no damage. Dylan played Secluded Glen, showing Spellstutter Sprite, and passed.
Brad, still on just three lands, attacked with Snapcaster Mage to put Dylan on 11 life. On the upkeep Brad cast Pestermite but Dylan had Spellstutter Sprite in response. At 10 life after making a Faerie Rogue token, Dylan played a Watery Grave tapped, activated Mutavault, and attacked Brad to 14.
Brad spent Phyrexian mana for Gitaxian Probe, seeing Mutavault and Spell Pierce. The draw gave him his fourth land, Hinterland Harbor, and a lot of thinking to do. He attacked with Snapcaster Mage, which traded for a Faerie token, and cast two copies of Tarmogoyf.
Dylan went to 9 on his upkeep. He activated Creeping Tar Pit, attached Sword of Feast and Famine, and attacked for five points of unblockable damage, forcing a discard of Remand. Postcombat Dylan attached the Sword to Spellstutter Sprite and passed.
Dylan shuffles up for Game 3.
Dylan untapped, went to 8 for his Bitterblossom token, and went for the kill with Spellstutter Sprite and Mutavault. Brad had Electrolyze for the Mutavault, which met a Spell Pierce, and then Snapcaster Mage to block the Mutavault.
With one turn to find an answer, Brad had none and scooped.
Brad 1, Dylan 1.
Brad had the option and chose to play. Both players kept seven. With time winding down, they played at lightning speed.
Brad started with Misty Rainforest for Steam Vents untapped and Serum Visions, going to 17, and split the scryed cards one-and-one. Dylan led with Darkslick Shores and passed. Brad had Hinterland Harbor and Tarmogoyf, but Dylan fought back with a Darkslick Shores and a Smother. On Brad’s turn, he had a Mountain and Snapcaster Mage to flash back Serum Visions.
Dylan loaded a Secluded Glen into the battlefield tapped and passed. On Brad’s turn, Snapcaster Mage attacked for two. Serum Visions was the follow-up. Dylan played a Watery Grave untapped and went to 16, while Brad went to 15 with Gitaxian Probe and saw a fistful of removal.
Another attack for two put Dylan on 14. Dylan untapped and played Secluded Glen, this time showing Vendilion Clique, and passed the turn. Brad attacked again with Snapcaster Mage, putting Dylan on 12 life. Vendilion Clique entered on the end-step, and a counter-war resulted in a Lightning Bolt clearing the Clique.
“You can keep those,” Dylan said. On his turn he cast Bitterblossom and passed. Brad attacked for two once more, putting Dylan on 10, and had Nature’s Claim for the Bitterblossom to put Dylan to 14. A fourth land meant Sword of Feast and Famine, but Dylan had countermagic.
A Watery Grave untapped put Dylan on 12. Snapcaster Mage attacked and made it 10. Engineered Explosives for two counters resolved and a fifth land came down for Brad. Dylan played River of Tears and passed. Another Snapcaster attack from Brad met Dylan’s Snapcaster Mage, which targeted Smother but blocked the Snapcaster anyway.
Draw, go, was the theme for several turns as both players sought action. Finally a Tarmogoyf resolved for Brad just as time was called in the round, but a second Tarmogoyf met Cryptic Command, which met Engineered Explosives activated in response to counter Cryptic Command for lack of a target. The match petered out into a draw.
Brad Nelson and Dylan Klett draw 1-1-1.
