Round 15: Matt Costa (BUG Loam) vs. Adam Cai (Grixis Delver)
Adam Cai, on an interesting version of Delver in Legacy
With both players at 10-4 and still in contention, Matt Costa and Adam Cai had to give it their all in this match to stay alive.
"Do you know what I’m playing?" Adam queried, out of curiosity. Matt seemed like he had an idea…but wasn't 100%.
"Maybe, maybe not."
Matt played his own Underground Sea and Pondered. A Lightning Bolt was revealed off the top for Adam, and his Delver transformed into a 3/2. Wasteland took out Matt's Underground Sea, and Adam attempted to play a second Delver. A Force of Will was met with a free Daze from Adam, letting Delver of Secrets enter the battlefield relatively unscathed.
Matt fetched using Verdant Catacombs on his turn for Underground Sea, and his Inquisition of Kozilek showed Adam's hand of Force of Will, Underground Sea, and Polluted Delta, taking Lightning Bolt. Adam attacked in with 3/2 and 1/1 Delvers, putting Matt to 11.
Adam revealed Spell Pierce on his next turn, and his two Delvers reduced Matt's life to 5. After peeking at his next card, Matt immediately picked up his cards for game two.
"That was the best draw I've had all tournament," Adam claimed.
Adam 1, Matt 0
Matt had assumed Adam was on Reanimator but was proven wrong. Figuring out what deck the opponent is on is half the game in Legacy. He would have a better idea in game two, as well as the play.
The two took a mulligan each to start. Adam accidentally saw a seventh card however, and the judge ruled he had to go to five. Perhaps it would be another quick game…
Matt used Polluted Delta to find Island and Preordained, while Adam fetched an Underground Sea and subsequently Pondered. Matt Preordained again on his second turn, sliding a Creeping Tar Pit into play.
An Inquisition of Kozilek from Adam saw Life from the Loam, Snapcaster Mage, Damnation, and two lands. It didn't look like Life from the Loam was the right decision here, so Snapcaster Mage it was! Adam cracked for another Underground Sea and Thoughtseized the Damnation, going to 16 life.
Matt untapped, used Life from the Loam to retrieve a fetchland, and passed. The two players found Wastelands, but Adam kept his, while Matt sniped Adam's Underground Sea. In response, Vendilion Clique came down from Adam after floating mana, but it saw only a couple weak counterspells. Adam left those alone.
Adam had one land in play, which he used to cast Delver of Secrets on his turn. Matt drew, Wastelanded Adam's lone land, and passed. Adam played a fetchland and passed without attacking, noting Matt's Creeping Tar Pit on the other side. Matt drew again, then played a second Creeping Tar Pit.
Brainstorm off the top for Adam flipped the Delver into a monstrous Insect. Matt went to 12 upon attacks, but Innocent Blood prevented him from taking any more. Adam played a second fetchland, cracked both for two Underground Seas, and summoned Tombstalker.
Matt 1, Adam 1
Matt Costa Loams back some Wastelands.
Matt took a mulligan and was happy with his six. Adam kicked the final game off with Underground into Duress; Matt showed Spell Snare, Innocent Blood, Scavenging Ooze, and Vendilion Clique, along with two lands. Adam took the Innocent Blood.
Matt played a tapped Creeping Tar Pit, while Adam Thoughtseized to show that Matt had drawn Life from the Loam; the Vendilion Clique went to the bin. Matt cracked a Misty Rainforest for Tropical Island and used Life from the Loam to get back the fetchland.
Adam merely passed with two lands, and Matt drew, played, and sacked Misty Rainforest, summoning Scavenging Ooze. Adam floated a blue, Dazed—bouncing a land—and Matt tapped for Daze. Ghastly Demise then took care of the Ooze as Matt was tapped out.
Adam was stuck on two lands for a few turns, while Matt went up to five lands. His Wasteland targeted Adam's Underground Sea. In response, Adam put Lightning Bolt on the stack, Dazed it, and bounced his own Underground Sea back to his hand. He then paid for the Daze, putting Matt to 15. Adam replayed Underground Sea and passed.
Adam found a second Underground Sea to play; after Matt dredged back Life from the Loam, Adam responded with Vendilion Clique; Matt Intuitioned in response for—let's see—Wasteland, Life from the Loam, and Darkblast. A tough choice for Adam, he let Matt keep the Wasteland. Vendilion Clique came in but didn't remove any cards with all those options in Matt's graveyard.
Matt cast Life from the Loam, getting back some lands. Adam Brainstormed and attacked with Vendilion Clique. He then played Tombstalker, removing six cards from his graveyard. Matt called a judge to see if he could Spell Snare, but Tombstalker's converted mana cost is eight, even when played for two!
Matt hit Adam for three with Creeping Tar Pit, putting them both at 12.
Adam used Wasteland to take out one of Matt's many lands and attacked with both fliers. Matt went down to 1 after a Lightning Bolt. Matt looked for outs by flashing back Brainstorm with Snapcaster Mage; on the third draw from Brainstorm, he dredged back Darkblast to murder Vendilion Clique. An Innocent Blood then saved Matt from certain death.
Matt dredged back Life from the Loam on his turn, Wastelanded Adam's Volcanic Island, Loamed back his lands, and Wastelanded Adam's final land. While Adam had no permanents, Matt still needed to find a win condition to take the match.
Matt found one in Scavenging Ooze, which started removing cards from Adam's graveyard, slowly growing it. It hit Adam for three, putting him down to 9.
Matt went up to 3 life after removing Adam's Vendilion Clique. He looked to have a game plan when he Wastelanded Adam's Polluted Delta. Adam went ahead and cracked it, going to 8. Matt removed a Snapcaster Mage from his graveyard, activated Creeping Tar Pit, and swung for exactly lethal.
Matt 2, Adam 1
