Round 15: Todd Anderson (12-2) vs. Jarvis Yu (12-2)
Todd won the die roll and chose to play. Both players kept seven.
Todd led with Gitaxian+Probe and saw Terminate, Lightning+Bolt, Tarmogoyf, and lands. He played Misty+Rainforest and passed. Jarvis had a Rainforest of his own and passed. On the end step Anderson found Steam+Vents. He played Snapcaster+Mage and flashed back Gitaxian+Probe for another card.
Jarvis went to 19 to find a Stomping+Ground on the end step, but he was well ahead of Todd’s 15 life. Thoughtseize put Jarvis to 17 but revealed two Lightning+Bolt, a Remand, a Snapcaster+Mage, and a Deceiver+Exarch and Splinter+Twin in Todd’s hand. Remand hit the bin. Blackcleave+Cliffs ended the turn.
Todd drew a Sulfur+Falls for the turn but did not play it right away. Instead he attacked with Snapcaster+Mage, which met Lightning+Bolt. Sulfur+Falls and a pass to Jarvis led him to play a second Blackcleave+Cliffs and an Inquisition+of+Kozilek, which drew the Deceiver+Exarch in response, but Jarvis had the Terminate for the 1/4.
Todd drew and passed. Jarvis went for Liliana+of+the+Veil, which ticked up and induced discards on both sides, both lands. Another draw-go turn from Todd put Jarvis in position to tick up Liliana once more. This time Splinter+Twin for Todd and Anger of the Gods for Jarvis hit the bin. Jarvis went for Tarmogoyf, but double Lightning+Bolt killed the creature.

Liliana ticked up again. Todd played a Pestermite, but Jarvis had the Lightning+Bolt for it. Liliana ticked up again, and after another turn, she went ultimate, sticking around with a single loyalty counter. Todd played Cryptic+Command to bounce Liliana and draw a card, but he still lost half his lands. Jarvis replayed Liliana and the draw-go resumed, though Todd soon had four lands again.
Todd had Gitaxian+Probe to reveal two pieces of removal – Jarvis had everything but a way to kill Tpdd. Then Raging+Ravine came down tapped and started tearing into Todd’s life total. Cryptic+Command bought Todd a turn, but Jarvis had a Dark+Confidant to find even more fuel and Raging+Ravine came down again. One more draw and Todd scooped up his cards.
Todd 0, Jarvis 1.
Todd had the option and chose to play. He jokingly called an encroaching penalty on Jarvis’s deckbox, which Jarvis moved, and they went on to mulligans. Todd kept his seven, while Jarvis sent his first hand back, keeping six.
Todd led with an untapped Steam+Vents, going to 18, into Serum+Visions, which left the top two cards as they were. Jarvis had Raging+Ravine and passed, while Todd answered with a tapped Steam+Vents and nothing else. A tapped Overgrown+Tomb from Jarvis also was a pass.
Todd’s Misty+Rainforest for a basic Forest broke the pattern, and Snapcaster+Mage targeted Serum+Visions for a flashback. Jarvis played Blackcleave+Cliffs and passed once more. Todd did three more damage to himself to put a Steam+Vents onto the battlefield tapped and cast Thrun%2C+the+Last+Troll.
Jarvis tried Dark+Confidant, which met Remand. The second attempt succeeded. Jarvis played a Marsh+Flats and passed. Todd played a Scalding+Tarn and cast Threads+of+Disloyalty on the Dark+Confidant, attacking Jarvis to 9 with Thrun. Todd went to 13 by searching for a basic Island, cast Serum+Visions, splitting the scryed cards, and cast Tarmogoyf.
Jarvis searched up a Blood+Crypt with his Marsh+Flats, going to 8 life. Abrupt+Decay on Threads+of+Disloyalty and Tarmogoyf were Jarvis’s plays. Todd added a seventh land to his battlefield and cast two pieces of burn on Jarvis’s Tarmogoyf before attacking with the team and putting a hurt on Jarvis, even after a block that cleared Jarvis’s board of all but Thrun.
Todd puts on his game face.
Jarvis tried Maelstrom+Pulse on Tarmogoyf, though Remand stopped it temporarily off a Snapcaster+Mage. The second attempt was successful. Todd forced a Thrun-on-Thrun battle on his attack, but he had regeneration mana where Jarvis did not and Jarvis lost his Thrun.
Todd 1, Jarvis 1.
For the decider, Jarvis chose to play. Jarvis mulliganed, while Todd gave his hand a bit of thought and kept. Jarvis thought about his six but kept.
Jarvis opened with Bloodcleave Cliffs and Thoughtseize, seeing a hand of two Snapcaster+Mage, one of which hit the bin, and five lands. Todd opened with a tapped Stomping+Ground and a pass. Jarvis had nothing on his second turn, while Todd had Misty+Rainforest. A Fire-Lit+Thicket gave Jarvis access to Tarmogoyf, which resolved.
Todd played Hinterland+Harbor and passed. On Jarvis’s upkeep he went to 19, fetching an Island, and cast Pestermite, tapping Blackcleave+Cliffs. Jarvis attacked for three, putting Todd down on life 16-18.
Todd untapped, drew, and thought. A Pestermite attack made the life totals 16-all, and after a Scalding+Tarn Todd passed. Inquisition+of+Kozilek met Counterflux and Tarmogoyf attacked for 4, putting Todd to 12 life. He went to 11 to search up a Breeding+Pool on the end step.
Jarvis had a basic Swamp on his turn, making three lands. A graveyard check and a pass from Jarvis sent Todd into thought mode before he had Scavenging+Ooze eat Jarvis’s graveyard and a Snapcaster+Mage.
Todd, on 12 life with a 3/3 Scavenger Ooze, gave his next move some thought. He attacked with both his creatures, which induced an Abrupt+Decay on Scavenging+Ooze, and Lightning+Bolt from Todd took out the Tarmogoyf in response. The life totals were 12-all after Pestermite connected. Todd played a Misty+Rainforest and passed.
Jarvis went to 10 with an Overgrown+Tomb on to the battlefield untapped. Inquisition+of+Kozilek put Todd in the tank before he went the three-life route, calling up Steam+Vents untapped and casting Snapcaster+Mage for Counterflux on the Inquisition.
Jarvis found a land on top with Dark+Confidant had Lightning+Bolt and Liliana+of+the+Veil to clear Todd’s board. Dark+Confidant attacked Todd to 6. Todd drew and passed his turn, and Jarvis found another land on top.
Jarvis found an attack with Dark+Confidant to put Todd on 4, but Todd had a non-blocking Vendilion+Clique in the postcombat main phase that knocked Jarvis’s last piece of removal – a Liliana+of+the+Veil – out of hand. Jarvis did not draw a piece of removal off Vendilion+Clique and extended the hand.
Todd Anderson defeats Jarvis Yu 2-1 and goes to 13-2, securing an invitation to Pro Tour Journey into Nyx!
