Round 16: Adam Prosak vs. Reid Duke
Adam is exposed to Vendilion Clique early in game 1.
Reid won the die roll and Adam mulliganed to six. “I ran so good yesterday,” he said with a laugh. “It’s like I’m not even the same person!” Reid started with Volcanic Island and Ponder, putting the three cards back after a little adjustment and drawing one of them. Adam opened on Gemstone Mine and Duress to see Daze, Sylvan Library, Natural Order, Lightning Bolt, and two fetchlands.
Adam discarded the Library and ended the turn, while Reid now passed turn 2 after making a land with no other plays. Cabal Therapy targeted Reid on Adam’s next turn, and Reid declined to respond; naming Daze, Adam spotted Vendilion Clique in Reid’s hand. During the end step, Reid pointed Lightning Bolt at Adam before fetching Dryad Arbor in the end step, starting a bit of a clock.
Adding his second Rainforest to the board, Reid fetched up Tropical Island and declined to Vendilion Clique Adam during the draw step. Adam Preordained, sending two cards to the bottom, and peeled a good one—Brainstorm. Tossing his Gemstone Mine, he played Cabal Therapy and aimed it at Reid.
The predictable Clique resolved first, spotting Lotus Petal, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Brainstorm, and Cabal Ritual, with Reid cycling the powerful cantrip and losing his Natural Order, revealing Green Sun’s Zenith to Adam. Drawing a land, Reid fetched Taiga and then cast the Zenith for two, grabbing Tarmogoyf to get a faster clock into play, attacking for 4 damage.
Adam drew, shrugged, and passed the turn to Reid. Reid swung for 8, putting Adam to 5, and now it was do or die. Adam cast two Lion’s Eye Diamond, Lotus Petal, a pair of Cabal Rituals, and made a Tendrils for 12 life. That reversed life totals immediately, but left Adam still dead to the board. He had a turn to peel Past in Flames—but it wasn’t Friday anymore.
Reid's NO RUG list had plenty of Storm defense.
Reid 1, Adam 0
Adam kept his seven this time, while Reid stared at his hand for a few moments before ultimately electing to do the same. Fetching Underground Sea, Adam cast Preordain to find a land. Reid’s turn 1 started with a fetch for Tropical Island and Green Sun’s Zenith to grab Dryad Arbor, accelerating his development considerably.
Adam knew to fear turn 3 Vendilion Clique at this point, but his hand was loaded on cantrips so he had not much more to do that play them out. Preordain kept a card and Ponder kept all three, Adam amassing the cards necessary for a combo kill quickly. Reid cast Sylvan Library and passed with one open mana. Debating his combo potential this turn, Adam decided to start with land and Cabal Therapy. “Pyroblast,” he declared, and Reid congratulated him on a wise choice, revealing Pyroblast, Force of Will, Ponder, Vendilion Clique, and land. “If you’d had Red Elemental Blast, I’d have flipped out,” Adam admitted.
That still meant he couldn’t quite combo, so Adam cast Brainstorm and then followed with Lion’s Eye Diamond—no Force of Will from Reid’s side. Reid paid 4 life for an extra card and then cast Relic of Progenitus, targeting Adam with it immediately before ending the turn with three mana available—just enough to Clique. Adam fetched to start his turn and grabbed Volcanic Island, casting Ponder. Reid Pyroblasted that, and Adam just made his land drop before ending the turn.
Reid dove into the books during his draw step once more, using Relic and ending the turn after taking just one card. Vendilion Clique in Adam’s end step revealed Past in Flames, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Dark Ritual, and Infernal Tutor; Reid cycled the Tutor. Taking 4, he cast Zenith for Noble Hierarch and attacked Adam for 4, dropping him to 15 and starting up a real clock.
Making a land drop, Adam sent the turn back to Reid with his time dwindling. Ponder and an attack for 4 from Reid, without a second Hierarch to guarantee him the kill two swings later. Adam decided it was time to make something happen and cast Past in Flames with two lands and his Diamond up, forcing Reid to pop Relic. Afterward, Adam ended the turn.
He knew Reid’s library had likely found him plenty of interaction, but he had to chance that wasn’t the case and build as much mass as he could before dying. He went to 7, drawing a land, and now had to decide if he was willing to risk Reid still having Lightning Bolts in his deck. Reid Brainstormed, Sylvaned, fetched, and attacked Adam down to 3 life before following with Ponder. He shuffled those three away, and now it was all on Adam.
Casting Ponder, Adam looked up at Reid... who Red Elemental Blasted, earning the concession.
Reid 2, Adam 0
