Round 3: Tom Ross vs. Chris VanMeter
Both players started out 0-2, but a win would mean they’d have the play in their elimination round in Round 4. Would Chris get there with Jeskai Tokens or could Tom improve to 1-2 with W/U Heroic?
CVM attacks with a horde of tokens.
Both players opened with temples with Tom landing the first threat in Favored+Hoplite off a Plains and Chris went for a Magma+Jet on the creature, but Tom stopped it with Stubborn+Denial. Chris untapped and used a Lightning+Strike to take down the Hoplite with Tom tapped out. Tom deployed Heliod’s Pilgrim to search up a Stratus+Walk and passed the turn.
Chris drew for the turn, but missed his third land drop for a second time and passed back. Tom took 1 to suit the Pilgrim up with an Eidolon of the Countless Battles and attacked for 3, dropping Chris to 16, who Raised the Alarm at the end step. Chris found a Temple+of+Triumph off the top, attacked for 2, and said “go.”
Tom continued building up the Pilgrim with a Stratus+Walk and attacked for 4, passing with an open Plains. Chris made more Soldiers at the end of the turn, untapped, slammed a Goblin+Rabblemaster, and attacked Tom down to 12. Tom used a Defiant+Strike on his Pilgrim at the end of the turn to draw a card and laughed at his draw. Tom added an Ordeal+of+Heliod to his Pilgrim and knocked Chris to 6. Tom passed, leaving up two lands.
Chris attacked with six tokens and a 4/2 Rabblemaster. Tom pondered before using a Feat+of+Resistance on his own Pilgrim, giving protection from white to make the Eidolon fall off as a creature, along with the Ordeal that went to the graveyard. Tom put the Eidolon on the Rabblemaster, trading them off, and fell to 5. Chris ended his turn with a Treasure+Cruise to refill his hand.
Tom put an Ordeal+of+Thassa on the Pilgrim, drew two cards off the attack, and dropped Chris to 2. Tom passed and Chris played a Jeskai+Ascendancy and attacked with his team. With no more tricks up his sleeve, Tom conceded the game.

The Boss suits up his creatures.
Tom opened up on the play with a Favored+Hoplite and continued his curve with a Seeker+of+the+Way as Chris shot down the Hoplite with a Magma+Jet. Tom dropped Chris to 16 with the Seeker and played another threat, this time the heroic Battlewise+Hoplite. Chris used his third turn to play a Seeker of his own and a Mystic+Monastery.
Tom put an Aqueous+Form on the Hoplite and attacked with the team, knocking Chris to 9 and bringing himself up to 22. Chris dropped a second Seeker+of+the+Way, but had to keep his other one back on defense. Tom grew his Hoplite with Defiant+Strike at the end of the turn, untapped, used another Strike, this one on the Seeker, and went to attacks, but Chris used an Erase on the Aqueous+Form, making Tom reconsider. After deliberating, Tom refrained from attacking with just an Island up.
Chris convoked one of his Seekers and killed off the Hoplite with a Stoke+the+Flames, and attacked with the other Seeker and Tom offered no blocks. Tom deployed Hero+of+Iroas and suited up his Seeker with a one-mana Ordeal+of+Thassa. Chris binned the opposing Seeker with a Lightning+Strike, Raised the Alarm, and attacked with his Seekers, dropping Tom to 15 and bring Chris back up to 13.
Tom used his next turn to tutor up an Ordeal+of+Thassa with Heliod’s Pilgrim and passed the turn. Chris played Jeskai+Ascendancy and attacked with his now 3/3 Seekers. Tom double blocked one of them, losing his Hero, and fell to 12. He went back up to 13 with a Tranquil+Cove and used another Pilgrim to find Ordeal+of+Heliod. Chris made three Goblins with a Hordeling+Outburst, growing his team and looting away a land, and Tom was forced to block tokens, losing one of his Pilgrims, and falling to 7.
