Round 4: Gerry Thompson (Delver Tokens) vs. Brian Stanek (B/R Zombies)
Brian Stanek takes the first game.
Gerry was quick to throw his first hand back, and his second set went away just as quickly before he nodded his agreement at his five-card hand.
“No land hands are always easy,” Gerry muttered.
The five didn’t look like much, unfortunately, as he was stuck on just a Plains while he took a beating from Brian’s Gravecrawler and Highborn+Ghoul. Liliana+of+the+Veil and no second land made Gerry’s decision easy as he scooped up his one permanent.
Brian 1, Gerry 0
Ever the professional, Gerry gave away nothing during sideboarding, shuffling his entire sideboard in while ambiguously answering Brian’s question about playing or drawing. Another no-lander had him on six cards, but this time Brian went to Paris with him to keep things fair.
Delver+of+Secrets was picked off by Tragic+Slip before Gravecrawler entered play. The zombie started in on Gerry’s life total as spells flew around it. Mortarpod launched a germ token at a second Delver+of+Secrets, Gather+the+Townsfolk plus Intangible+Virtue was neutralized by Liliana+of+the+Veil and Tragic+Slip, and Gerry was on 14 life with no hand after Liliana ate his Timely+Reinforcements, but running Sorin%2C+Lord+of+Innistrad and Delver+of+Secrets quickly gave him board advantage against the lone Gravecrawler that had strapped on Mortarpod.
Intangible+Virtue did helped Sorin’s tokens take over while Brian flooded out and we were off to game three.
Brian 1, Gerry 1
Gerry Thompson in Round 4 with Standard Delver.
Zombies exploded onto the board, with Diregraf+Ghoul leading into double Gravecrawler for Brian. Gerry’s Delver+of+Secrets and Intangible+Virtue start paled in comparison and were quickly eliminated by Highborn+Ghoul plus Tragic+Slip as the zombies shambled in for Gerry’s brains.
Lingering+Souls gave him a bit of help, but Liliana+of+the+Veil ate one of the spirits and the other decided to trade with the Diregraf+Ghoul, but Gerry fell to six. Timely+Reinforcements got him right back in the game with six life and three 2/2 tokens, and Delver+of+Secrets put him into a position to race if he could get it to flip.
The zombies knocked him back to 6 and made them both discard a card, earning Brian a “free” Gravecrawler from the deal, but he took a vicious nine damage to the face after Celestial+Purge flipped Delver+of+Secrets. Gerry was suddenly set up for the kill with a flashed back Lingering+Souls, but he was forced to block and trade a token with a Gravecrawler to stay alive after getting rid of the intimidating Highborn+Ghoul with the revealed Celestial+Purge.
Liliana+of+the+Veil gave herself up to take down another token after Gerry fell to 2, but he was able to smash back with his team for another nine damage, making the totals 2-1, ever so slightly in Gerry’s favor. Gitaxian+Probe revealed a lethal Brimstone+Volley as Brian’s last card, and Gerry crossed his fingers as passed the turn with lethal on board against Brian’s all-Swamp board. Could Brian find an untapped red source to win it?
The answer was no and Brian graciously extended the hand.
Gerry wins the match 2-1
