Round 4: Jeff Hoogland vs. Josh Ravitz
Washington State Champion Josh Ravitz met up with Open Series grinder Jeff Hoogland as both players were looking to get into the Legacy portion of Day 1 at 3-1. Would Josh pilot Mono-Black Devotion to the win or would Jeff’s Brave Naya list get there?
Josh uses an Abrupt Decay on a creature.
Both players went to six immediately and Josh started things off with a Temple of Malady. Jeff went down to 18 to play a Soldier of the Pantheon and Josh added a Swamp to his board. Jeff attacked for 2 and added a Voice of Resurgence to his board. Josh played his third land and played a Lifebane Zombie to exile a Fleecemane Lion from Jeff’s hand.
Jeff bashed with both creatures and Josh traded the Zombie for the Soldier and the Voice connected for 2. Jeff played a Temple of Plenty and played a Dryad Militant before passing. Josh stalled on three lands but found a Nightveil Specter. Jeff attacked with both creatures again and Josh put the Specter in front of the Militant so Jeff used a Ghor-Clan Rampager to keep his creature alive and drop Josh to 11. Josh attempted to use a Hero’s Downfall on a threat, but Jeff had Brave the Elements and Josh passed with no fourth land.
Jeff 1, Josh 0
Josh again went down to six, but Jeff found a suitable seven. Josh led things off with a Temple of Malady. Jeff went to 19 from Mana Confluence to have a turn-1 Dryad Militant. Josh had another temple and Jeff matched with one of his own before attacking for 2. Josh had the turn-3 Lifebane Zombie and exiled a Fabled Hero from Jeff’s hand. Jeff shocked himself and used a Mizzium Mortars to kill the Zombie and attacked again with the Militant. Josh played an Overgrown Tomb and a Pack Rat and passed the turn.
Jeff attacked with the Militant and Josh put the Rat in front of it. After the creatures traded Jeff played a Fabled Hero, but Josh had the answer in Drown in Sorrow and played a follow-up Pack Rat. Jeff dropped a Voice of Resurgence and passed back with two lands untapped. Josh attacked with the Rat and made another as Jeff declared no blocks, dropping Jeff to 14. Jeff attacked with his Voice and Josh blocked and activated his Mutavault, but Jeff had the Selesnya Charm and ended his turn with a Dryad Militant. Josh attacked for 2 with his Rat and tapped out for a Desecration Demon.
Jeff played a land and passed, then sacrificed his Voice when Josh went to attack with his Demon. Josh played his second Desecration Demon and Jeff had seen enough and scooped up his cards.
Jeff 1, Josh 1
Jeff shows his hand after Josh played a Lifebane Zombie.
Jeff would be on the play for the first time in the match and both kept their seven-card hand. Jeff started with a Dryad Militant and Josh had a Golgari Guildgate. Jeff bashed for 2 and added a Temple of Plenty. Josh killed the Militant with Abrupt Decay and passed. Jeff tapped out for a Fabled Hero and Josh used an aptly-named Hero’s Downfall to kill it. Jeff played a follow-up Fabled Hero and passed back.
Josh had an Abrupt Decay for the Hero and passed with two Swamps up. Jeff played his third Fabled Hero and passed the turn. Josh dropped a Lifebane Zombie to exile a Fleecemane Lion. Jeff sent in the Hero and Josh offered no blocks so Jeff used a Gods Willing to trigger heroic then used Giant Growth and triggered heroic again then went for Ajani’s Presence and dealt Josh 18 damage for the match win.
Jeff 2, Josh 1
