Round 5: Jacob Kory vs. Brett Parise
Jacob Kory, Maverick master.
It was a battle between northern and southern California here in round five with Jacob Kory's green-white Maverick deck staring down Brett Parise's unique Goblins build. Kory had success a few months ago, piloting his Maverick deck to a semifinal appearance in the Legacy portion of the Los Angeles Open Series that was in his backyard.
The game started fast and furious with Mother of Runes eating a Lightning Bolt and Pyrokinesis wiping out both Noble Hierarch and Dryad Arbor at the cost of a Mogg War Marshal. Goblin Chieftain took advantage of the clear board, and Goblin Piledriver joined it when Jacob rebuilt with Noble Hierarch off Green Sun's Zenith.
Knight of the Reliquary stuck a fork in the goblin team, but Brett jammed his dudes in anyway, losing Goblin Piledriver to the 6/6. A second Knight of the Reliquary arrived and took up guard duty as its buddy attacked, and Brett looked to be out of gas. Jacob showed his expertise with the deck when he went rapid-fire through Stoneforge Mystic for Sword of Fire and Ice and tapped a Knight of the Reliquary to Crop Rotation up a Gaea's Cradle with four creatures in play. He tapped the rare land and a Savannah to play and equip the powerful artifact on the remaining Knight of the Reliquary, jamming it in for 10 damage, shocking the Goblin Chieftain and drawing a card off the sword.
Brett's five life and bricked draw step sent us to game two.
Jacob 1, Brett 0
A mulligan from Jacob preceded another flurry of trades kicked off game two as Swords to Plowshares shut down Goblin Lackey and two Mother of Runes and a Dryad Arbor fell to Pyrokinesis. That set Jacob way back and gave Brett a ton of time to set up his game plan with a pair of Aether Vials and Goblin Matron into a Goblin Ringleader that hit Goblin Matron, Goblin Chieftain and Goblin Lackey. The second Goblin Matron dug Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker out of its hole and promised to do some funky tricks with Brett's board.
Brett Parise's unique Goblin deck is taking him to new heights.
It cloned Goblin Matron and dug up another Goblin Chieftain that launched Brett's team at Jacob for nine damage. Jacob considered his land-light board and decided that he his best bet was to win game three.
Jacob 1, Brett 1
Jacob had a better start for game three with Savannah and Green Sun's Zenith for Dryad Arbor culminating in an underwhelming second turn Scavenging Ooze facing down Goblin Lackey. Aether Vial joined the Goblins side and Goblin Chieftain allowed Brett to send both of his guys in. Path to Exile sent the Goblin Lackey packing before Scavenging Ooze and Goblin Chieftain traded. Jacob was sans action on his turn and dejectedly passed it back.
Goblin Ringleader kept the juice flowing, picking up Goblin Chieftain, Goblin Lackey and Goblin Matron. Wasteland ate one Jacob's Savannah, leaving him with just two lands as the Goblin Ringleader crashed in. Jacob drew for his turn with a heavy sigh, passing it back without another land as the goblin swarm came to play. Another whiffed land drop had him scooping up his cards in frustration.
Brett 2, Jacob 1
