Round 5: Joe Lossett vs. Steve Mann
Going into the match blind, one would assume it would be Miracles vs. a Delver deck, but only half of that assumption would be correct — and it wasn’t the Miracles side. Joe mixed things up, bringing a spicy Reanimator list to the event, while Steve had Temur Delver. Would the change benefit Joe or would Steve’s assault of insects and elementals be enough?
Joe attempts to bring back a Sphinx of the Steel Wind.
Joe opened things up with a Ponder off an Underground Sea, getting a strange look from Steve, who led with a Scalding Tarn and a Gitaxian Probe to see what was up. Seeing it clearly wasn’t Miracles, Steve passed and Joe played a Bloodstained Mire and passed back. Steve passed, prompting Joe to Brainstorm and Steve fetched a Volcanic Island in response and used a Pyroblast on the cantrip.
Joe led Turn 3 with a Careful Study, binning a Sphinx of the Steel Wind then fetched another Underground Sea and went for Reanimate. Steve fetched in response, getting a Tropical Island, and Brainstormed. After putting two cards back, Steve used a Force of Will, pitching Brainstorm to keep the Sphinx from coming back alive. After weathering the first storm, Steve fetched another Volcanic Island and played a Young Pyromancer and went on a Treasure Cruise for one mana to get an Elemental.
Joe drew and passed, leaving Steve to attack him down to 16. Steve fired off another Brainstorm and played a Delver of Secrets before passing. Joe again had no play and Steve used his fourth Brainstorm at the end step to generate another token. Steve flipped his Delver with a Ponder and attacked 8 before adding a Tarmogoyf to his board. Joe went for an Exhume, but Steve had another Force of Will, to stop Joe from getting back into the game.

Steve has Young Pyromancer to bring the beats.
Joe shipped away his seven and found a playable six, leading with an Underground Sea. Steve got to the board early with a Delver of Secrets on his first turn. Joe played a Volcanic Island and played Entomb, putting a Sphinx of the Steel Wind into the graveyard before passing. Steve used a Brainstorm in his upkeep to flip his Delver with a Gitaxian Probe, which he used to see a couple copies of Abrupt Decay and Careful Study, but no green source. Steve bashed for 3 and shipped the turn.
Joe led his next turn with an Underground Sea and attempted to play Careful Study, but Steve used a Pyroblast to prevent it from resolving. Steve kept up the beats, using another Brainstorm and playing a Misty Rainforest. Joe took a look at his next card and passed the turn. Steve cleared his library by fetching a Tropical Island, attacked for 3 more, and played a Young Pyromancer.
