Round 6: Ben Isgur vs. Michael Martin
Both players commiserated over their mutual inexperience in the Legacy format, but each would be looking for a win to put them close to drawing into the Top 8. Piloting Stoneforge lists that each splashed an additional color, the match promised to be a demonstration of those strengths.
Ben hopes to follow up his Standard finals with another strong finish.
Michael played Island and shipped the turn, while Ben played Flooded+Strand and did the same. During Ben's end step, Michael cast Brainstorm—following on turn 2 with just Mishra%27s+Factory, having failed to locate the Stoneforge or fetchland he was looking for. Ben fetched his way to a second Tundra on turn 2, casting Stoneforge+Mystic and searching for Umezawa's Jitte.
Another Mishra%27s+Factory enabled Michael to swing for 2 damage, passing with his Island up, but Ben played an Island and passed right back. Michael Brainstormed for some additional pressure before dropping another Mishra%27s+Factory, coming in for damage, only to by shut down by Ben's naturally drawn Batterskull.
Ben attacked Michael to 16 on his turn and passed, Mystic still ready to wreak some havoc. Michael played Wasteland and passed, nodding as Ben jammed Jitte into play during the end step. He untapped and put his Jitte onto the Germ, attacking Michael to 12 and adding some counters to that Jitte.
A fourth Mishra%27s+Factory for Michael gave him the fifth land he needed to cast Batterskull, which Ben allowed to resolve before removing with Oblivion+Ring. One more attack put Michael a turn from death, and his next cards didn't help him out.

Michael led Tropical+Island on turn 1, while Ben dropped Plains. After Michael played Wasteland, Ben dropped down Tundra, unafraid. Declining to trade lands, Michael played Misty+Rainforest and passed the turn. Ben had a fetchland, passing right back to Michael, who played Island.
After Ben played Tundra, the party began with a Brainstorm from Michael on his own turn, meriting Ben's Spellstutter+Sprite. Spell+Snare from Michael forced through Brainstorm, but Michael declined to fetch anything and just drew, playing another Misty+Rainforest. Ben likewise Brainstormed on Michael's turn, untapping before fetching to play his third Tundra. Michael fetched now, for Tundra, and moved to make some fresh draws.
Once Michael had ended his turn without a land drop, Ben cast Stoneforge+Mystic. Fetching Batterskull, Ben fired Spellstutter+Sprite at the Brainstorm Michael attempted to resolve. Tapping down to just Misty Rainforest, Michael tried to resolve Jace, the Mind Sculptor—Ben had Force of Will to counter, and untapped with Mystic in play.
Michael's mana plagued him throughout the match.
Dropping Volcanic+Island, he tried his own Jace, which naturally resolved as Michael shook his head, chastising his own impatience. Ben brainstormed before attacking for 2 damage, clearly holding no intention of trying for Batterskull at this time despite two untapped fetchlands and a Volcanic+Island. Michael's own Stoneforge+Mystic resolved on the next turn for Sword+of+Feast+and+Famine, and Ben fetched Island during the end step. He brainstormed once again with Jace, playing another Flooded+Strand, and passed the turn.
Michael contemplated his options, eventually deciding to cast nothing. When Ben fetched Island during his own upkeep, Michael made no moves. Another brainstorm with Jace for Ben, followed by Wasteland. During the end step, Michael used Stoneforge+Mystic for Sword, and Ben replied by using Wasteland on Tropical+Island. Floating a blue, Michael sent Brainstorm, but Red Elemental Blast countered.
With his Sword in play, Michael cast Oblivion+Ring in an attempt to remove Jace, headed off by Mana+Leak. Stuck on just Misty Rainforest, he passed the turn over to Ben and his freshly-crafted Batterskull. The brainstorms continued, and Germ attacked Michael to 14. Ben played Riptide Laboratory and ended his turn, squeaking farther ahead on the board with every turn.
Ben chucked his Spellstutter+Sprite to the equipped Stoneforge+Mystic, rather than using Riptide+Laboratory to ick it back up—was he playing around potential Mana+Leaks himself? Geist+of+Saint+Traft from Michael on the following turn earned another Pyroblast, prompting a chuckle.
Jace's unsummon removed Stoneforge+Mystic from Michael's field, and he fell to 2 life over the next two turns. Making it to seven lands, Michael tried an Elspeth%2C+Knight-Errant, and Ben Brainstormed in response. Cracking Flooded+Strand afterward, Ben cast Brainstorm and then allowed Elspeth to resolve.
Declining to unsummon, Ben had the Swords to remove the token anyway.
