Round 6: Brian Kibler (Maverick) vs. Patrick Sullivan (Burn)
Noble+Hierarch and Knight of the Reliquary in the popular G/W Maverick deck.
Patrick’s trusty tool betrayed him right away as he was forced to take a mulligan on the play while Brian got to keep his. Mother+of+Runes fell to Chain+Lightning, but Patrick was missing a second land and couldn’t play the Goblin+Guide he had drawn.
Qasali+Pridemage was next up to bat, trading with the Goblin+Guide as Scryb+Ranger was revealed. Noble+Hierarch and the Scryb+Ranger replaced their fallen friends, but Searing+Blaze picked off the mana producer and Patrick seemed to be in the clear. Then Scavenging Ooze showed up.
Brian immediately turned his hungry 2/2 into a 4/4 and gained two life, eating Mother+of+Runes and Goblin+Guide and getting the ooze out of burn range unless Patrick wanted to chuck his already precarious position with Fireblast or spend a pair of bolts. Brian was likely fine with either of those.
The ooze took Brian out of Patrick’s crosshairs despite a handful of damage, and Patrick was struggling to come up with a new plan. He started with Lava+Spike, knocking Brian back down to 16, but with two more bodies waiting to be eaten in Brian’s yard, it was going to be a longshot and Patrick scooped it up after Brian attacked and he failed to find another land.
Everything goes right for Brian this round.

Another immediate mulligan put Patrick in quite a bind and he was deflated further when Brian accidentally dropped Umezawa’s Jitte on the table. “That’ll probably be the death of me,” he noted.
A suspended Rift+Bolt was Sullivan’s first order of business, connecting with Kibler’s dome after Mother+of+Runes led the way for him. Chain+Lightning put an end to the mom, but Kibler refilled with Qasali+Pridemage and two more Mother+of+Runes.
Still stuck on one land, Patrick was unable to connect with a burn spell through both Mother+of+Runes and the Umezawa’s Jitte did in fact put an end to him after a lopsided pair of games. The veteran took it in stride, and the friends wished each other good luck as they packed up their pets.
