Round 6: Dave Shiels vs. Kevin Jones
A classic battle was brewing between these northeast players. It was Boston versus New York, the Red Sox against the Yankees, U/R Delver (though Shiels wants his deck to be called RUG Insectile Aberration instead) taking on Esper Stoneblade.
Kevin Jones sharpens his Stoneblade.
Shiels wasted no time in taking a lead, zipping out Delver of Secrets and Grim Lavamancer on the first two turns while Kevin had to content himself with a pair of Brainstorms. Fetchlands in between each of them was a nice consolation prize, however, and Shiels noted his jealousy.
However nice his graveyard looked, Kevin was still way behind as the Delver of Secrets flipped off Daze on turn three to let Dave get in for four. Kevin had no choice but to play into the known Daze on the next turn as he binned Lingering Souls and took another five to the face after Grim Lavamancer started getting busy.
Spell Pierce ate the second half of Lingering Souls and Shiels’ team connected again before Kevin finally found a Swords to Plowshares for Delver of Secrets. He tried to run it right back with Snapcaster Mage, but Dave had a Snapcaster Mage of his own to reload Spell Pierce.
The pair got in for more damage before Dave filled out his ranks with another Delver of Secrets and a naked Snapcaster Mage Kevin tapped out for both sides of another Lingering Souls with just two life remaining. Dave had burned all the fuel for his Grim Lavamancer to get Kevin to this point, but he had him right where he wanted him anyway. Both Snapcaster Mages and the Delver of Secrets shoved into the red zone, forcing Kevin to block everything or die, and Grim Lavamancer was waiting in the wings no matter what happened.
Dave 1, Kevin 0
Dave Shiels' U/R Delver deck is firing on all cylinders today.
Dave struck first again in game two, sneaking in Delver of Secrets on turn one after Kevin took a mulligan on the play. It flipped and started attacking right away while Dave protected it with Spell Pierce, though that let Stoneforge Mystic slip into play netting Batterskull.
Sulfuric Vortex trumped Kevin’s play, however, and now he was under heavy duress without a way to stop the Insectile Aberration or the deadly enchantment that shut off the important side of Batterskull. Losing chunks of life at a time, Kevin tried to fight back with Inquisition of Kozilek only to see a pair of Price of Progress waiting for him when all Dave needed was one to finish the job.
Boom, Kevin was down to 2 after Dave’s last attack, and Sulfuric Vortex wrapped it up.
