Round 6: Edward Song vs. Matt Hoey
Matt's played his first matches ever with RUG Delver today, and he's won every one of them. Edward's deck is a little less interested in Magic: The Gathering—he's playing Dredge!
Matt's expression says it all!
Starting his turn, Ed dredged a Grave-Troll and hit Bridge, Therapy, and Faithless Looting. When his Faithless Looting dredged him into more Bridges and two Narcomoebas, Matt was looking really grim. Edward attacked for 2, then sacrificed a Narcomoeba for Cabal Therapy, naming Lightning Bolt—and earning the concession!
Edward 1, Matt 0
Dismal about his odds after seeing his opponent's decidedly non-interactive deck, Matt knew he'd need his sideboard to help him. Mulliganing for some sideboard cards in game 2, Matt didn't mind seeing Edward join him on six cards. Each player dropped to five cards, and now Matt was pessimistic again. “Your deck works much better on five cards than mine!”
Matt fell to four, declaring he would go until he hit a Tormod's Crypt at this point, while Edward kept. Nimble Mongoose and Taiga for Matt, while Edward led off with just Lion's Eye Diamond, happy to dodge Daze. Matt fetched Volcanic Island and played Tarmogoyf.
Edward used the Diamond during his upkeep to dredge with Grave-Troll, but hit nothing worthwhile. He dropped to 13, and Matt passed. Edward made it to an Ichorid on the next turn, but still no Bridges!
Matt attacked Edward to 6 and passed, fingers crossed—Edward brought back an Ichorid and hit a Narcomoeba, but no Bridges put him in a very bad spot! His Cabal Therapy met Daze, hardcast, and he passed with Narcomoeba on defense.
Swinging once more, Matt had Tormod's Crypt to put the game away.
Edward 1, Matt 1
Edwards's dredges weren't always what he desired.
Matt was considerably more excited after taking down game 2 following his mulligan to four. Edward took the play and kept seven, while Matt considered taking another trip to Paris before settling down on seven. Edward's Gemstone Mine and Cabal Therapy on himself, naming Stinkweed Imp, revealed Firestorm, Golgari Thug, and Cephalid Coliseum in his hand, plus another Mine. Matt jotted those cards down and fetched Tropical Island, then played Nimble Mongoose.
Dredging five, Edward hit two Ichorids, Stinkweed Imp, and Golgari Grave-Troll before playing another Mine and passing the turn. Matt Brainstormed and declared that he'd hit the Crypt, putting back two cards before dropping Misty Rainforest to fetch Taiga and casting a second Mongoose. He swung for 1, played the Crypt, and ended his turn.
When Edward stacked his Ichorid triggers, Matt responded with Crypt. That gave Edward a window during his upkeep to Firestorm for 2, discarding Golgari Thug and Stinkweed Imp. He then dredged the Imp and hit Narcomoeba alongside Bridge from Below, with a Dread Return not looking too bad.
Falling to 15 for Scalding Tarn, Matt played Delver of Secrets and attacked. When Edward blocked with a Narcomoeba, Matt Bolted his Delver to remove Bridge before damage. Edward's next dredge hit Cabal Therapy and two Faithless Lootings, in addition to finally putting him on seven cards in his graveyard. Without a dredger, he was forced to simply tap out for Faithless Looting, pitching those dredger.
Matt attacked him to 7 and promised he was holding two Lightning Bolts, ending the turn. Do or die for Edward—he dredged into more Thug, no other dredgers—it was Coliseum or bust. He dredged four, hitting Narcomoeba and Bridge alongside an Imp, followed by a Grave-Troll and a second Bridge, concluding with a dredge for six that hit Cabal Therapy.
Putting his one Narcomoeba into play, Edward declared Cabal Therapy, putting two Zombies into play. Matt responded with one Lightning Bolt and then allowed it to resolve. Edward named Lightning Bolt—he hit! Matt had tried to sandbag it and gotten crushed for his troubles!
“I can't believe that,” he admitted. Shrugging, he attacked and earned chumps from the Zombies before playing another Mongoose. Edward summoned up Ichorid and then dredged into no Narcomoeba, no Bridge—ouch! He popped his next Coliseum to hit one Bridge, but that left him drawing a Narcomoeba.
He sacrificed Ichorid to another Cabal Therapy and Dread Returned Elesh Norn. Unfortunately for Edward, Matt drew Tormod's Crypt and got rid of the graveyard—Elesh Norn only had four power, and that couldn't attack for lethal before Edward's library ran out. Matt made it irrelevant by topdecking a Chain Lightning on the following turn.
What a match!
