Round 6: Kenneth Longhurst vs. Anthony Wilson
Kenneth had plenty of sideboard slots for Affinity.
“Well good,” Anthony said. “We both think this is a bad matchup!” After spending one evening playtesting Legacy, these players had apparently come to some conflicting conclusions about the pairing. Anthony had Glimpse Affinity, while Kenneth was playing Goblins.
Kenneth kept and started with Badlands and Aether Vial. Anthony’s start was more explosive by a mile: Glimmervoid preceded Glimpse of Nature and three creatures—Ornithopter, Ornithopter, and Memnite—drawing three cards. Kenneth ticked his Vial to one and used Wasteland on that Glimmervoid.
Attacking for 1 damage, Anthony followed with Inkmoth Nexus and Frogmite. Kenneth moved his Vial to two and played a second one, but didn’t have any two-drops on Anthony’s turn—he took 3 damage from the Frogmite and the Memnite.
Drawing Mogg War Marshal after moving his Vials to three and one, he cast the token generator and played Bloodstained Mire before ending his turn. Anthony hit his second land, Tree of Tales, and cast Umezawa’s Jitte before attacking with his Frogmite. Responding with a fetchland crack and a Vial activation, Kenneth searched for Tuktuk Scrapper and Badlands—not good for Anthony!
He blocked the Frogmite with War Marshal and his token, getting a fresh Goblin, and then moved to his own turn. Vial ticked to four and two, enabling the Scrapper for free. Warren Weirding killed an Ornithopter, and Kenneth swung past the robots for 2 damage with Matron and his token. Anthony cast Cranial Plating and equipped it to Ornithopter, but Kenneth responded with Lightning Bolt, refusing to use his Scrapper on Plating. He used it once Memnite attacked, killing Jitte and then blocking.
Kenneth swung 4 damage and ended the turn, his Vial on three with a fresh Rishadan Port at the ready. Declining to upkeep the land, Kenneth was looking at an empty board when Anthony cast Glint Hawk, floating a green mana and returning Tree of Tales. He followed by casting Arcbound Ravager and equipping the Hawk with Plating.
Warren Weirding forced Anthony to sacrifice his Ravager, and Gempalm Incinerator killed the Glint Hawk. Kenneth attacked Anthony to 9, and shipped with one card in his hand. Anthony turned on his Nexus and went to 8 to turn on the second one, getting in for 5 poison with Cranial Plating—very, very close to a kill.
Kenneth 1, Anthony 0
Anthony's Glimpse Affinity list has continued to search for the spotlight since a runner-up finish.
Tree of Tales into Vault Skirge and Mox Opal gave Anthony a free Glint Hawk, followed by Signal Pest. “Aether Vial, pass?” he asked with a laugh, while Kenneth instead fetched Badlands and Lightning Bolted the Skirge. He took 3 damage on Anthony’s next swing, Inkmoth Nexus joining up to threaten an alternate route to victory.
Aether Vial from Kenneth got Ancient Grudged, but Kenneth did have Wasteland for Inkmoth Nexus. Nevertheless, the flying beats continued to come—Kenneth was on 9 as Anthony added a free Frogmite to the field, threatening very close to lethal.
Kenneth 1, Anthony 1
Anthony went to six cards, and passed the turn with no land after Kenneth played just Mountain. Badlands for Kenneth, while Anthony played Glimpse of Nature off Glimmervoid and Ornithopter before passing the turn, trying to claw his way back to health.
Kenneth fetched Badlands with Bloodstained Mire to cast Goblin Warchief, but passed the turn after that. Anthony lacked his second land still, using Blue Elemental Blast to destroy the Warchief. Kenneth replaced it with a second and sent the turn back, Anthony just dropping Glint Hawk.
Kenneth 2, Anthony 1
