Round 6: Todd Anderson vs. Andrew Wright
Geist+of+Saint+Traft and Moorland+Haunt! This round, he was pitted against Andrew Wright’s Maverick list, sporting a few tweaks to the usual complement of creatures. In particular, Andrew has been a big fan of his Sylvan+Safekeepers.
Forest for Andrew on the first turn, while Todd played Misty+Rainforest and sent the turn. A Misty for Andrew searched up Savannah on turn 2, followed immediately by casting Stoneforge+Mystic. Todd used Force+of+Will, removing Mana+Leak (you read that right) to counter the dangerous 1/2. On the next turn, Todd fetched Tundra, played Tundra, and used his own Stoneforge+Mystic to find Umezawa’s Jitte.
Scavenging+Ooze resolved for Andrew after he played a Forest, and Swords+to+Plowshares on the Mystic removed the threat of Jitte for now. Todd played a third Tundra from his hand and considered the board before passing. Andrew played Horizon+Canopy and attacked with his Ooze, but Todd had Vendilion+Clique to consider blocking it, cycling a Batterskull out of Andrew’s hand. He decided to take the damage, but was punished when Andrew had hit Swords off that Clique.

Todd sighed and drew, playing Misty+Rainforest before ending the turn, nodding as Andrew broke his Canopy to draw a card. On his own turn, Andrew played Karakas before casting Green Sun’s Zenith for one, leaving two mana open including the Karakas. It resolved, and Andrew found Sylvan+Safekeeper to keep his Ooze protected. During Andrew’s end step, Todd cast Spellstutter+Sprite, and fetched for his fourth Tundra. Drawing, he cast Jitte and equipped it, attacking for a point and gaining two Jitte counters. Todd used both to try and kill Safekeeper, but Andrew sacrificed two lands instead.
In a tight spot, Andrew attacked for 4 to put Todd on 11 life. He resolved Sylvan+Library and passed, having no response to Todd’s immediate swing with Jitte. Again two Jitte counters traded with two lands, and Todd passed—he was real eager to land Swords on that Ooze!
Sylvan for just one card on Andrew’s turn, and he attacked Todd to 7 before playing Dryad+Arbor and passing, only two lands left. Todd’s next attack found the mark, slaying Safekeeper and then the Arbor before he cast Swords to execute that Ooze. Adding Mishra’s Factory to the board, Todd ended his turn with three cards in his hand.
Andrew had just Savannah left. He used it to cast Mother+of+Runes and played Wasteland, but Todd lacked any fear. He dropped a second Factory and swung with the first, pumping. His Sprite’s Jitte killed the Mother+of+Runes, and when Andrew’s Stoneforge+Mystic met Spell+Snare he decided to concede in the face of Todd’s equipment.

Each player kept their starters once again, and Andrew began with fetch for Forest prior to casting Birds+of+Paradise. Todd had Flooded+Strand for Tundra prior to passing the turn, while Andrew added Plains to the board and tried Sylvan+Library. Todd replied with Brainstorm, followed by Force+of+Will pitching Snapcaster+Mage. Todd played Moorland+Haunt and cast his own Stoneforge+Mystic, searching for Manriki-Gusari. During Todd’s end step, Swords exiled his Stoneforge+Mystic.
Misty+Rainforest fetched Forest, Andrew casting Thrun%2C+the+Last+Troll afterward. Todd’s eyes widened slightly, but the 4/4 resolved and would likely win the game from this position. Todd’s Karakas had nothing to say about it, and he ended the turn.
Qasali+Pridemage boosted the Thrun to 5/5 on offense, and left Todd on 14 life. He cast the Manriki-Gusari on turn 4 and passed, lacking anything else worth doing. Andrew attacked him for 6 damage, Todd falling to 8, and Andrew cast Stoneforge+Mystic to grab Umezawa’s Jitte. During the end step, Todd’s Spellstutter+Sprite provoked Andrew into killing Manriki-Gusari. That gave Todd a chance to land Jitte on the Sprite, but Swords+to+Plowshares slew the Faerie.

Island from Todd met Plains and Mother+of+Runes from Andrew, a particularly vexing one-drop to deal with. Brainstorming, Todd followed by fetching Plains and using Swords+to+Plowshares to dispatch the one-drop for good. Savannah from Andrew enabled him to cast Noble+Hierarch, and Todd had no reply.

His third turn saw Todd drop Island and pass, but Andrew moved to seize an advantage with Stoneforge+Mystic on turn 3. The little girl landed, searching for Umezawa’s Jitte, but Andrew lacked a third land and passed the turn after that. During the end step, Todd cast Snapcaster+Mage to Swords the Mystic, losing his Mage to a Swords on Andrew’s side.
Things got serious now—Todd played Mishra’s Factory and cast Jace%2C+the+Mind+Sculptor to bounce Noble+Hierarch. Andrew found a land on top of his deck, and decided not to recast the Hierarch. Instead, he stuck Choke! Todd was down to just his Plains and Mishra’s Factory, and he now Brainstormed for help, and perhaps additional blue sources. He dug his way to Wasteland, and after attacking with Mishra’s Factory he used the Wasteland on Andrew’s Horizon+Canopy, leaving him with Plains and Savannah.
Andrew cast Noble+Hierarch with the land and then pointed Wasteland at Todd’s Factory. Nodding, Todd continued to Brainstorm with Jace. He played Karakas and passed the turn, giving Andrew a level of freedom. Todd burned Path+to+Exile when the Noble+Hierarch attacked Jace, technically leaving Andrew’s mana worse than the Hierarch had made it. Andrew recovered with Birds, and ended the turn.
Todd fell to 20 as he fetched up Tundra prior to fatesealing himself with Jace to bottom the card. Andrew took this opportunity to cast Jitte, but Todd’s Force+of+Will removing Spellstutter+Sprite countered it. That gave Knight+of+the+Reliquary room to resolve, ending Andrew’s turn.
Predictably, Todd bounced the Knight with Jace—less predictably, he followed that play with Elspeth%2C+Knight-Errant! Making a Soldier token, Todd ended the turn with some serious planeswalker juju going on. Green Sun’s Zenith for Sylvan+Safekeeper from Andrew preceded the Knight+of+the+Reliquary this time, stressing Todd’s Jace significantly.
An Oblivion Ring on Choke freed him up a little, followed by another Soldier token and a brainstorm with Jace. Todd dropped Tundra, and passed the turn—he hoped his Ring would hold up! A Soldier token blocked Knight’s attack on Elspeth, while Andrew hardcast Batterskull. Todd’s edge was eroding, but now a least he could play all his spells! He aimed Path+to+Exile at Knight during the end step, but Andrew sacrificed a land to keep him. Untapping all of his lands, Todd made a Soldier token after brainstorming, and cast Snapcaster+Mage to flashback Path+to+Exile on Knight, doing so again once Andrew made the big man untargetable, but Andrew sacrificed a third land. Untapping, Andrew sent Knight and Germ token into Elsepth, and Todd debated his blocks before just putting a Snapcaster and a token in front of them. Andrew played Windswept+Heath, down to two lands now.
Todd made a token and brainstormed, passing again. He’d binned that Snapcaster+Mage in order to turn on his Moorland Haunt—now that Elspeth was on eight loyalty, he’d begin generating indestructible Spirits with that Haunt! Andrew played Tower+of+the+Magistrate and again attacked with those two creatures, Todd chumping with Snapcaster and a Soldier. Andrew fetched for Plains, and then cast Green Sun’s Zenith for three—Todd countered with Force+of+Will.
Todd attempted to bounce Knight, but Safekeeper saved it. He followed that with a token from Elspeth, going to nine loyalty, and then cast Brainstorm and passed. On no cards, Andrew drew and then attacked, killing off the last of Todd’s tokens in the process. During Andrew’s end step, Todd made a Moorland+Haunt token.
Untapping, he immediately made Elspeth’s emblem and then brainstormed with Jace, adding Mishra’s Factory to the field and making another Spirit token. Only Batterskull attacked now, and Todd blocked with everyone to kill the Germ token. Andrew passed, and Todd moved back into gear.
He attempted to bounce Knight after Wastelanding Dryad+Arbor, but Andrew sacrificed a land to keep his Knight around. Todd continued making tokens with Elspeth, but wasn’t creating the clock he could with her pump effect. Andrew passed again, and Todd sacrificed Jace to try and bounce that Knight on his own turn.
Andrew sacrificed his last land to protect it, and Todd cast a new Jace to bounce the Birds+of+Paradise. Andrew plucked a fetch for Savannah off the top and recast Birds+of+Paradise, but he wasn’t getting anywhere.
