Round 7: Ethan Walker vs. Ryan Martin-Patterson
Legacy Open competitor Ethan Walker
Ethan and Ryan squared off in the penultimate round with Top 8 hopes alive and well. A win for either player would likely put them in position to possibly draw into the playoffs.
Ryan won the die roll and led with Underground+Sea. Ethan drew his card and immediately hit the tank, revealing himself to be some kind of intricate combo deck. He led with Chrome+Mox and Ryan Brainstormed his way into Daze. Ethan pitched Elvish+Spirit+Guide to pay for it and imprinted Empty+the+Warrens on the mox. Simian+Spirit+Guide powered Desperate+Ritual into Seething+Song into Goblin+Charbelcher. Not a bad first turn.

Ryan chose to start again and kept, but Ethan had to do some mental math before keeping his opener.
Ryan ended his turn after playing Scaldin Tarn and it was time for Ethan to start the machine. Elvish+Spirit+Guide into Tinder+Wall produced two red mana after Ryan allowed it. Ethan used one to cast Rite+of+Flame. He filtered a red to a green with Manamorphose and repeated the process before firing off Gitaxian+Probe. He saw Flusterstorm, Ponder, Brainstorm, Reanimate, Swamp and Marsh+Flats. A Simian+Spirit+Guide enabled Goblin+Charbelcher and Ryan had to blow Brainstorm. He found the clutch Force+of+Will, shipping Ponder. Now out of gas, Ethan passed the turn with two cards in hand.
Ryan fetched a second Underground+Sea and passed the turn, while Ethan just passed the turn back. Another cycle of draw go left the board at no permanents for Ethan to three Underground+Sea for Ryan. Both players had several cards in hand.
Ethan passed back again and Ryan had to discard down to seven, losing Platinum+Angel.
Ethan found a Taiga and Ryan was ready to capitalize on the last discard by bringing back Platinum+Angel with Reanimate. He fell to 10, but he looked to be well ahead, especially after Ethan drew and discarded Goblin+Charbelcher.
Platinum+Angel knocked Ethan down to 14 and Ryan discarded Jin-Gitaxias%2C+Core+Augur. Ethan drew and discarded Empty+the+Warrens and Platinum+Angel smashed again. Animate+Dead brought back Jin-Gitaxias%2C+Core+Augur and filled Ryan’s hand to overflowing. He discarded a ton and passed the turn.

Ethan took a reluctant mulligan and Ryan kept immediately, causing Ethan to sigh through clenched teeth. He pondered over his second hand and eventually kept.
Chrome+Mox imprinted Simian+Spirit+Guide before Ethan revealed his hand for Land+Grant. He showed Desperate+Ritual, Goblin+Charbelcher, Elvish+Spirit+Guide. He played the fetched Taiga and moved all-in, pitching Elvish+Spirit+Guide and playing Desperate+Ritual for Goblin+Charbelcher. Ryan had the Force+of+Will, removing Empyreal Archangel. Ryan played Polluted+Delta and passed the turn.
Ethan calmly drew and shipped, but Ryan was busy cracking his fetchland for a second Underground+Sea. Ryan pointed Thoughtseize at himself and discarded Blazing+Archon for future use as he revealed two Exhumes and a Flusterstorm.
Facing down the hard lock for his deck, Ethan jumped back into the tank and studied his sideboard. Apparently he had come up with a plan as he confidently passed the turn back. Blazing+Archon was Exhumed and it was back to Ethan.
“Okay, here we go!” Ethan said.
He tapped Taiga for Rite+of+Flame, which Ryan chose not to Flusterstorm. He followed up with Lion’s Eye Diamond and popped it to Burning+Wish. Flusterstorm finally made an appearance, but Ethan paid for it with all of his mana. He grabbed Shattering+Spree to give him an out to the Pithing+Needle and passed the turn.
Blazing+Archon smashed in and Ryan passed. Shattering+Spree wiped out the Pithing+Needle and Blazing+Archon cut Ethan down to 10. Another cycle passed and Ryan was down to 5, and when Ethan whiffed again on the next turn, the match was over.
