Round 7: Pat McGregor vs. Ian Ellis
Two tried and true Legacy Open champions on their archetypes of choice—Aggro-Loam for Pat McGregor, and Ian with his “black, green, and white spells†but emphasizing some power two-drops backed by removal and disruption.
Winning the die roll, Pat started on Bloodstained Mire and ended the turn. Ian had Swamp, and Pat fetched up Badlands to go with Taiga and cast Dark Confidant. “Copy cat,†Ian declared, casting his own Dark Confidant.
Pat's Bob revealed a land, and Pat fetched for Bayou before using Liliana of the Veil to kill the Dark Confidant on Ian's side. Tarmogoyf and Thoughtseize gave Ian some options, and he pitched Countryside Crusher to leave Pat with Tarmogoyf, two Lilianas, and a land. Pat revealed Engineered Explosives to Confidant and cycled his Tranquil Thicket before discarding a Liliana to Liliana while Ian lost an uncastable Stoneforge Mystic.
Pat added Tarmogoyf to his board, and ended the turn. Ian played his second Wasteland and Pulsed the Liliana of the Veil before Wasting Badlands, hoping Pat would miss black mana. Mox Diamond from Pat off the top let him cast Liliana, killing Ian's Tarmogoyf and forcing through a healthy attack!
Another Maelstrom Pulse from Ian killed Liliana, but he conceded to the Countryside Crusher Pat cast on the following turn.

Ian started game 2 with turn 1 Dark Confidant through Mox Diamond and Plains, but a Dismember from Pat off Taiga slew the 2/1. Another Dark Confidant replaced it, but Ian had no more lands. Pat tried to match wits with his own Bob, but Ian's found him land and Swords to take it away. Stoneforge Mystic for Batterskull and an attack for 2 put Ian pretty far ahead!
Ian's marching towards another Top 8 in Legacy.
Pat cast Tarmogoyf and Wastelanded Ian's Horizon Canopy, but another Swords from Ian and Bayou kept him chugging along, ending the turn with Mystic untapped. Refusing to give up, Pat fetched another dual and cast Liliana of the Veil for the edict, getting Mystic after she dropped down Batterskull.
Pat 1, Ian 1
Wooded Foothills for Pat, but Ian had some sweet turn 1 plays—Forest, Mox Diamond, and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben! Suddenly oppressed by her effect, Pat smiled. He played Bayou and passed, responding to Ian's attempted Wasteland with fetch for Taiga and Lightning Bolt. Ian calmly replaced his Thalia with a second.
Forgotten Cave from Pat kept him off spells for the turn, dropping to 17 when Thalia attacked. Ian's Scavenging ooze threatened to grow large fast and also to take Life from the Loam offline—Pat needed to kill it. Getting a creature onto the field instead, he went for Countryside Crusher.
Ian couldn't kill the Crusher but had Maze of Ith to protect himself. His Ooze was a 3/3 but not getting any larger for the time being. Pat's Wasteland destroyed Ian's Bayou, and he lost some lands to the Ooze in reply. Ian used Wasteland to put Pat below three mana, his Crusher ensuring he wouldn't make it much higher!
Pat passed, and Ian found Swords to Plowshares for the Crusher to attack for 5 damage. Pat was in recovery on mana, but Ian removed his cheapest removal spell with Surgical Extraction on Lightning Bolt. Pat could only draw a land to let him cast Mox Diamond, finally able to muster some spells.
He dropped to 9 from Ian's next attack, untapping with the three mana he'd worked pretty hard to get. Ian had Qasali Pridemage but no mana to sacrifice it with, leaving Pat forced to Terminate it on his own turn. The beatdown got worse when Ian added Knight of the Reliquary to the board, and he conceded after drawing a card.
