Round 7: Tony DeVeyra vs. Blaine Patrick
Blaine Patrick looks to sweep his opponent under the RUG.
With one loss apiece, Blaine and Tony were unable to safely draw into the Top 8 and would have to battle it out for the spot. Neither was happy with the situation.
Tony's Grim Lavamancer got the action started early against Blaine's Misty Rainforest, but his Scavenging Ooze was met with Spell Snare off of a fetched Volcanic Island. The Grim Lavamancer got in for a point and Tony passed the turn.
The red wizard got hit with a Lightning Bolt and Blaine added a Wasteland—currently useless against Tony's Forest and Mountain—before passing the turn and countering Tarmogoyf with Force of Will. Tony fought back with a Wasteland of his own to off the Volcanic Island, but Blaine's Tarmogoyf off a fresh Tropical Island put him in quite a bind.
He managed to resolve a matching Lhurgoyf on his next turn, but he was unable to given the amount of burn RUG typically packs. Tony dug in further with Life from the Loam for two fetch lands and a Wasteland, using the latter to keep Blaine off of red mana and allowing him to block an incoming Tarmogoyf. Blaine shrugged and added a second Tarmogoyf to his board, but frowned when Tony showed him the Lightning Bolt to finish off the blocked copy.
Life from the Loam kept working as Tony found some cycling lands to power it up, and he had enough time to Raze all of Blaine's colored lands and resolve a Countryside Crusher that grew to monstrous size from its own ability and some cycling lands. Tony stuck the 9/9 in and dropped Blaine to 5 before passing the turn at 12 life while Blaine was stuck on just Wasteland. He couldn't find a combination of lands and spells in time to make a comeback and we were off to game two.
Tony DeVayra has adopted Aggro Loam as his weapon of choice.
Tony 1, Blaine 0
Nimble Mongoose off of Tropical Island was trumped by Wasteland, leaving Blaine without a second land. He attacked with his little dude and passed the turn, nodding as Scavenging Ooze barred the Nimble Mongoose's path. He discarded Stifle on his next turn after whiffing on land again and Tony turned up the heat with Life from the Loam and Dark Confidant.
With Tony tapped out, Blaine seized the opportunity to get rid of the powerful sorcery and used Surgical Extraction on it during his main phase. Tony tried to save it with Noxious Revival, but Blaine had a second Surgical Extraction to impose his will, removing all four copies of Life from the Loam from the game.
Way ahead with four mana sources to none, Tony decided he was willing to trade his Dark Confidant for Nimble Mongoose, sticking both of his creatures into the red zone after netting Grim Lavamancer. Blaine declined the trade, however, falling to 12 and saving his Nimble Mongoose and Tony added Grim Lavamancer and a 2/3 Tarmogoyf to the board as he went for the kill. Blaine found a land, fetching up Volcanic Island and offing the Tarmogoyf with Lightning Bolt, but he was going to need a miracle to come back, and Countryside Crusher plus Wasteland was more than enough to put an end to Blaine's misery.
Tony wins the match 2-0
