Round 8: Art Macurda vs. Brock Jones
Legacy Open competitor Art Macurda
There's a lot on the line in the final round of the swiss. The winner of this match will have enough points to make it into the Top 8, tiebreakers willing.
Brock exploded with Wasteland, Birds of Paradise and Scavenging Ooze on his next turn, looking to set up something big. Art kept pace with Wasteland on Grove of the Burnwillows and very old school superstar Quirion Ranger.
Brock raised, committing another Grove of the Burnwillows, summoning Mother of Runes and playing Umezawa's Jitte. He passed the turn with just one card left in hand. Art was stuck on land and Brock made life even tougher on the next turn.
Birds of Paradise picked up Umezawa's Jitte and flew over for a point, bolstered by Noble Hierarch. Brock used the counters to kill both of Art's guys before passing the turn. Art found a second land and played his own Umezawa's Jitte to trigger the legend rule, but he wasn't out of the woods yet.
Brock ate Quirion Ranger with Scavenging Ooze and attacked for four before using Wasteland on Art's Savannah. He added another Mother of Runes to the board and passed the turn. Art played another Savannah and found Dryad Arbor with Green Sun's Zenith. Noble Hierarch completed his turn.
Brock kept piling on, finding Scryb Ranger with his own Green Sun's Zenith. He smashed for another four with the Ooze and Art fell to 11. Knight of the Reliquary gave Art a sizeable creature, but Scavenging Ooze and Mother of Runes were going to make life difficult for him.
Brock 1, Art 0
Art played his third land and passed the turn, while Brock recruited a Scavenging Ooze. Aven Mindcensor came down on Brock's end step and Art sent it in to combat on his turn. He followed up with an un-pumped Knight of the Reliquary. Brock had his own Knight of the Reliquary, but he had a fetchland in the graveyard.
Brock sent his Scavenging Ooze into the red zone and Knight of the Reliquary blocked with two lands in the yard. The ooze ate the lands and Mother of Runes saved it, allowing Art to nail the Mother of Runes with Swords to Plowshares. With that major threat down, Art picked up the pace, adding a Scavenging Ooze of his own off of Green Sun's Zenith. Aven Mindcensor hit again, and the life totals were 15-14 in Art's favor. Scavenging Ooze ate the dead Knight of the Reliquary, but the life gain was negated because he used Horizon Canopy to do it.
Legacy Open competitor Brock Jones
Brock wanted to make use of his knight's size before the Scavenging Ooze got the best of his graveyard. He attacked with both of his creatures and sent Art down to 7 life. Brock had no further plays and passed with four cards in hand. A Wasteland from Art Razed Savannah and Noble Hierarch joined the team, but Art decide to keep his creatures home and said go.
Brock played Tower of the Magistrate and summoned another Knight of the Reliquary, but couldn't afford to send his creatures in and passed the turn with the life totals 13-6 in Brock's favor. Art used Brock's end step to remove several lands from Brock's graveyard and fetch up a Wasteland with Knight of the Reliquary. He used it to destroy Horizon Canopy, Brock's lone remaining white source. Art attacked with his Aven Mindcensor this time and Brock took the three, going to 10. He used his active Knight of the Reliquary to turn his Forest into Maze of Ith before taking his turn.
Now stuck on Maze of Ith and Tower of the Magistrate for lands, Brock was unable to play anything or attack into the active knight, so he passed the turn. Art turned his tapped Dryad Arbor into Savannah and ate one of Brock's dead lands on end step. He untapped and cast Green Sun's Zenith for one, finding Quirion Ranger. He used the ranger to bounce Savannah and untap Noble Hierarch and start eating more lands from Brock's graveyard.
Brock had to play draw go without colored mana, and Art was back at it, this time with Umezawa's Jitte ready to go. The life was getting slim for both players with Brock on 8 and Art on 5, so Brock had to use his Maze of Ith a little less tactically than he wanted, just trying to stay alive. With time running out and without colored mana, Brock scooped after drawing his card for the turn.
Brock 1, Art 1
Art made his own Birds of Paradise to try to catch up on resources, but Brock had the Swords to Plowshares to set him right back. He equipped the Dryad Arbor and attacked for four, plucking a land from Art's hand and untapping his lands.
Art tried to fight back with Scavenging Ooze, but Brock had Path to Exile to keep the board clear. He played Knight of the Reliquary before attacking with his Dryad Arbor and said go after triggering the sword.
Art had Aven Mindcensor to block the sworded up knight on the next turn, but he was falling far behind. Krosan Grip wiped out the sword, but there were still some large creatures to deal with. He couldn't find an answer and kindly conceded to Brock in extra turns.
Brock 2, Art 1
