Round 8: Brad Nelson vs. Joe Lossett
Both players from Pod A are looking to get their giant monsters into play ahead of schedule. Would Brad, who didn’t have to play Legacy yesterday, sneak Emrakul into play for the win or could Joe reanimate a Griselbrand first?
Brad waits for permission to play his spell.
Brad began the game with an Overmaster as a cantrip and followed it up with a Preordain after Joe, on a mulligan to six, dropped a Polluted Delta. Joe cracked his fetch at the end step, evening life totals at 19, and Brainstormed. Joe untapped and had to pass, missing on a land drop or another manipulation spell. Brad, meanwhile, had one of his own in Brainstorm and passed after adding a Flooded Strand to his board.
Joe drew and proceeded to discard, binning a Griselbrand while Brad cleared the top of his library by fetching a third Volcanic Island. Brad led his next turn with a City of Traitors and a Lotus Petal then played Sneak Attack, getting a Force of Will from Joe, who pitched a Tidespout Tyrant. Brad tanked in response, but eventually let the enchantment go to the graveyard and Joe fired off another end-of-turn Brainstorm.
Joe untapped and played Reanimate targeting the Griselbrand, but Brad couldn’t play his Flusterstorm quick enough. When Brad untapped, he resolved Sneak Attack, cracked his Petal to put in Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and flashed another from his hand, leading Joe to concede the game.
Brad 1, Joe 0
Joe threw away his opener once again and led off Game 2 with a Ponder off an Underground Sea, opting to shuffle away the three for a fresh card. Joe aimed a Thoughtseize at his opponent after playing a Tropical Island, but Brad countered with a Flusterstorm leading Joe to pay one mana for a copy and then used a Daze for the other to get to rip a Grafdigger’s Cage from Brad’s hand.
Brad played a Flooded Strand and Pondered, passing the turn after keeping the cards in order. Joe just replayed his Tropical Island and shipped the turn back. Brad added an Ancient Tomb to his mana base and passed, leading to Joe using a Brainstorm at the end of the turn. Joe considered his turn for a bit and decided to play an Underground Sea and pass without any other action. Brad followed suit and played another Flooded Strand before saying “go.”
Joe went for a Careful Study, resulting in Brad fetching a Volcanic Island and playing Dig Through Time, but Joe used a Force of Will, pitching Daze, to fight it. Brad fetched another Volcanic Island and used Flusterstorm, putting three copies on Force of Will and one on Careful Study. Joe decided to pay the one for his Careful Study and let his Force get countered by the Flusterstorm. Brad resolved his Dig and allowed the Careful Study to resolve as well, leaving Joe to discard a couple lands.
Brad led off his next turn with an Overmaster, which Joe let resolve by a nod of the head, then played a Lotus Petal and a Show and Tell, going to 14, and put in a Griselbrand while Joe had no monster of his own to play. Brad, surprised by seeing no opposing monster, passed and Joe attempted an Entomb, but Brad had the Flusterstorm. With no way out, Joe extended the hand.
Brad 2, Joe 0
